    CBR600f3 Cam Chain

so my 95 cbr600 developed a rattle at 500rpm and with a bit of research worked out that it needed a new cam chain tentioner, ordered and fitted easy job..... then the noise has started again only when cold and at low revs....i have taken out the tentioner and played around with it and the noise stopped again for a few days but it is now back again and is bugging the crap out of me!!
How hard is it to replace the cam chain and the inner part of the tentioner that goes against the chain? And if hard (i am not the worlds best mechanic) any ideas what a garage would charge, and also any suggestions of a good and cheap mechanic? The bike could do with a tune up at the same time and maybe a service.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Rolling the new chain in is not a hard job, peening over the pins to join it is a pain in the arse, if you are not a great mechanic or have a lot of confidence in your skills, get someone else to do it. If you get wrong, bad shit happens in your engine. im not sure if they have a screw type tensioner or just rely on oil pressure like the older ones, in either case, you can get manually adjustable tensioners for them, might take a bit of finding now but they were available. Give Gavin (mobile motorcycle Medic) a call, honda genius, you will find his number on here if you search.

Was that meant to be 5000 RPM?
Just that if you're idling at 500 RPM, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine rattles.

The tensioners from that period were prone to flogging out. From memory the revised ones had a blue dot, instead of a black (or something like that).

I wouldn't say it's hard to replace a cam chain. There's no need to cut/join. Just take the old one out, and put the new one in.
As Sean'o said though, get the timing wrong and bad shit happens.

I thought cam chains were supposed to last forever, but I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I'll be interested to know if yours hasn't, cos I'll be learning something new.

    Good luck

yes it was 5000, the new tentioner had the blue dot and was purchased from honda, might have to go with the manual tentioner which i can get on e bay but just don't want the chain to shit itself so if the chain needs replacing then i would rather get it done.
