Copying transponder 'black keys' - Yamaha

    Hi all,

I bought my 2006 Yamaha FZ1N with only one black key.

Yamaha says that the black keys can't be copied without the red-coloured key that comes with the bike. Confirmed through every Yamaha dealer in Perth.

The only course of action according to Yamaha is buying a new ECU and lock set at a cost of $2,200.

    That wasn't going to happen.

I tried searching all the Yamaha forums and although there's quite a few people who've lost their red keys, there are no alternative solutions except for replacing the ECU with a US non-immobiliser ECU ($600 USD) and vague references to 'a guy in the hills that used to be able to copy Ducati keys, PM me'.

Well, I went to an automotive locksmith today and they copied the black key in less than 3 minutes for $140 including the blank with transponder.

They did use a generic Yamaha blank so it might be worth taking a genuine Yamaha blank for them to flash.

The specific locksmith was A1 Locksmiths, Bedford, WA, ph 9370 2943. They fell over themselves to help me and were great.

When I called, they said they were unsure whether they could do it but they said to come over and they could check to see if it could be done in 2 minutes without charge. I'm sure other automotive locksmiths everywhere would do the same.

It's not a perfect solution however. If the ECU loses it's code, it'll be time for some serious dollars to be put on the counter.

Has anyone had their ECU lose it's code?

Probably also applicable for other Yamahas including the R1, R6 etc and maybe Ducatis so I hope this helps,

    MitchellC.

    Thanks Perdition.

Dammit, I guess I should have posted the question before pulling my hair out finding out it was possible.

    Cheers,

Talk to Diamond Lock and Key first. They don't use a Yamaha blank, they have there own blanks and they can do it. I watched them do a Kwaka Z1000 the other day.

@MitchellC - can you actually start the bike with that key? If so: great!

Yup just fighting a similar thing with my 2001 Corolla. Lost my only key... Toyota are quoting me $1600 for a new ECU and install. A1 locksmiths quote me $600 odd to come out and reprogram my ECU and cut me 2 new keys

    Very helpful mob

    Cap,

    Worked first time, no dramas.

I'm using the copy as my primary key now... and loving it.

I have lost my red and black key for my R6, and am left with one spare black key that won't start the bike. I went down to Diamond lock and key this morning and they said they couldn't help me, stating my only option was a Yammie dealer.

Please tell me I don't need a new ECU. Is there anything that can be done aside from turning the house upside down searching for the third time?

    Cheers.

If your spare black key doesn't start the bike, there is no immobiliser code to copy......... So you probably do need to replace the ecu etc, so that you have a code that works. As Rharris is one of the owners of Diamond Lock & Key, I don't know that he will be able to help you any furthr.

so i guess there is no transponder or its died or fried in this key you have? If you're sure its just mis-placed i would be tearing the house up like charlie sheen in a hotel room with a hooker trying to find it!! moving some furniture round would be a damn sight cheaper than 2k for a new ECU and ignition.
    Good Luck

When you say your black key won't start the bike does it turn in the lock ?

Nah. The battery admittedly is on the fritz at the moment. But even when it was fine the bike did the same thing. I always just assumed the red key needed to be present for it to start, or that this black key never had the code. I have taken the battery out and will put a new one in tomorrow morning just to be sure though, although yeah, even with a good battery this key never worked.
