Dead bike. Zero electrical power to bike. Need help

I was cruising down Burswood Drive when suddenly I lost all power. The engine cut out, the lights went out, hell the needle on the tacho decided to take a break at 2,000rpm.
After trailering the bike back home, I've checked the:
Battery - Still has plenty of power
Battery Connections: Didn't pop off, nice and tight
    Fuses: All still good.

Even the red blinking light for the immobilizer isn't there.
    What is wrong??
My bike is a 2006 GSX-R 600. It's only 18,000km and I ride like a pussy as anyone on a WSR can attest to.

I tried attaching a portable battery unit to the connectors. It didn't bring the red blinking light back

As K1GxR said, check your main fuse. Its usually not located with your other fuses, will be in a box of its own, usually next to or very near the battery, probably a red or black box with 30A on it

Also just checking th voltage is not a good test. If a cell has collapsed in the battery then it may report voltage but not be able to deliver any current due to a mostly dead short. If you can pull the battery and put an external load across it you'll know if it works or not, otherwise take it to a battery place & they have load testers to do the job properly.

You could also try running the bike from a car battery using jumper leads (disconnect the bike battery in case it's shorted).

I'm working on my bikes tommorrow but could help out if you bring it to me.

I'll PM ya my number in case.

OK I found the main fuse this morning and it was blown.
I swapped in the spare, plugged in the battery and pow, blew the spare 30A as well.
So it looks like there is a rogue ground somewhere. This is gonna be a pain to find...

the rogue ground most likely will be the regulator/rectifier or a worn through wire. i'm guessing the former. buy new fuses, disconnect rectifier replace fuse and check again or use multimeter.....

where are all the ducati electrics flamers?? so very very quiet when it's one of the jappers

    good luck

I just love how the two of them most sensible bits of tried and tested advice has come from the Ducati owners...

Ok, pull off the fuel tank and the airbox. Disconnected the regulator rectifier. My housemate tested the regulator/rectifier for me using his multimeter. It was giving wonky readings on some connections.
Pulling the entire unit off, the wire sleeves were melted and copper exposed. Parts of it were bulging.
So... yeah it looks like the regulator rectifier.

Does the fuse no longer blow, now the rectifier is disconnected?

I need to buy some new fuses first to test that out. I'm think of just replacing all the fuses with the fancy LED indicator ones for ease of troubleshooting in the future.

Yup. I've sent a couple emails to some shops in the US for a MOSFET R/R unit made for my model and year.
Seeing it is Sat over there I don't expect a reply before Tuesday.
I'm guessing it'll be about $200 or so with UPS delivery.

This. Call the Suzuki shop and check if your year is included in the rectifier Recall. If it is you get a new one for free

Sometimes they will even do a goodwill warranty if it's a known problem. Triumph has the same issue with r/r's. The MOSFET r/r is definitely the way to go and far superior to stock SHUNT type units.

don't know if it affects the K1 and can't find any notice about it, but i am on tip toes about my regulator / rectifier. asking any shop tells me not to worry until it happens to me. i did come across a lot of gixxers from a wide range of years and engine sizes that had this problem.

i'd avoid getting a local rewound one as i haven't found any good ones.

update us about the MOSFET unit. i'm getting paranoid (K1 model is now 10 years ++, done 20,000 kms so expecting it to happen). would like to get one on standby.
