^is this type of tool something you can buy from supercheap?
(and suitable for for removing and installing rear shock springs)
That looks like it'd do it... Man that sort of thing scares the shit out of me... Like crawling under a car when its on ramps

yeah.. nath and i had a bit of a play with his shock last night, seems like there is a LOT of pressure even with the preload backed all the way out.
i gave morgan at 2wheel wreckers a call to ask them if they could do it.. he reckons they have a dodgy home made job and it has been known to let go with a hell BWOING! and recommends heavy welders gloves and face masks!
btw... have y ou got your lathe setup yet?
i might need a collar machined, what is the maximum operating diameter of the work piece?![]()
these can be made from modified "g" or "c" clamps . saw in some mag article , maybe classic bikes .
I think I remember seeing something like that at Gavs place last time I was there...
But I might be wrong

they have them at supercheap, saw some the other day.
Can't remember how much, but don't think they were a bank-breaker.

If you back off the preload it may not require too much effort to compress the spring.
One method i've used is to compress the spring in place and tie it up. I used lots of old tie wire. Once the weight is removed the spring will stay compressed.
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.
It depends on the bike some have heaps of preload some you can just take off. Use a Press and be careful is the way I do it. The hard part is having the right sizes clevi, in the pick of the press above as they too are all different. Gozer what bike is it for??

Reason I ask is the RGV valving is pretty light and will you have enough adjustment to still control the spring ?? Often if you up the spring rate heaps you need to make an internal change to the shocks valving thats all. Chuck it in 1st I guess and see how you go.

ok the new spring is
59mm ID
7.5kg/mm
150mm length
the old stock VJ22 RGV250 spring is 52mm ID at one end and 59mm at the other hence the requirement for 1x slip in collar (and spring rate is something like 5.5 or 6.0 umm ive forgotten what he said already *sigh*)
greg gave me some instructions on how to make a ghetto spring compressing tool, im not sure i followed him though
he reckons if i get two old brake rotors and bolt 3 lengths of half inch rod inbetween them through the existing bolt pattern.
then fit the shock inside this contraption, upside down
then put a bottle jack inside this contraption, i will be able to compress the spring with the jack
urrrr
Great idea yeh that will work. The part of the disc where the hub mounts will help to stop the shock flying out. I might have to try that Cheers![]()
New project thats all I need

Off tho the wreckers for some U/S old discs. They would need to be mcpherson strut types though.

Or buy the supercheap one,
if it breaks (and your face is intact) take it back, money back.
If it doesnt, use it once, take it back, money back. - it wasnt for the purpose you thought...
Have seen them about before in supercheap, coventries ect. I bought mine from a shop that sold hose accessories, from memory - cant remember the name of the place, sorry, but they were about $40.

Its a risk unless you make a mount to hold the top clevis. The reason I use a press is that it holds it straight, its still a risk then again pressing anything is.
I have found with the automotive ones slip (not fun) and the hooks are too big and hit on the shock body![]()
I've not found a set yet that work. Pit posse in the US do some for dirt bike but only up to a about a 6.0kgmm spring I guess you could try and see if they would stand it. I find it easier just to use a press. it works its pretty safe if you have done a bit of work with them.
