    Exhaust Painting/Coating

After a bit of advice on Exhaust painting/coating.

The Exhaust header and pipe on my CBR 600 (carbon steel) are rusting quite badly. I had a go at painting them about 4 months ago using VHT High Temp Paint but the paint is flaking off and the rust returning.

Keeping in mind the bike is quite old, ceramic coating is probably too expensive.

Can anyone recommend a cost effective coating/paint? or someone that can do a resonable job?

    Cheers

Did you prep them before you painted them ?

Id strip them back, wire brush all the rust and ranex it all then reprime and paint it again.

The ceramic coating is about $330 - $400 for a full exhaust.

Never really seen VHT last very long TBH the good thing about pot belly black is its black so blemishes rust comming through tends to blend in, it isn't very fussy about surface prep and basic wire brushing. It will look a bit crap after a while but a bit of a clean up and another cost fixes it really quick and usually the quanities it comes in you have quiet a bit left.

Can just make out the exhaust in this pic, up under the seat. I got it done in blek so it'd hide better, in relation to the rest of the bike.

You can also see the pipe down under the YAMAHA underneath the bike, done in a blek ceramic, here as well as the springs, which were Teflon coated. The straps on the cans were done in Teflon, too, as they were stainless and would have stood out like dog's bollocks.

Ahhhh, if you used the 'Hi Temp Engine Enamel Paint' that is only rated to like around 287 DegC which isn't enough.

I have used the VHT Flame Proof Coatings which are rated at 815 Deg C with no problems on a car exhaust manifold. I used the Flat Red colour and it never flaked. Give that one a try... lots cheaper than coating and in my opinion looked pretty good !

VHT Flameproof Coatings from Speco Thomas
    A few colours availble too
Colours available: Flat White (SP101), Flat Black (SP102), Flat Grey (SP104), *Flat Gold (SP105), Flat Silver (SP106), *Flat Yellow (SP108), *Flat Red (SP109), *Flat Blue (SP110), *Flat Orange (SP114), Clear (SP115), Flat Aluminium (SP117), White Primer (SP118)

Was still going stong after 10 years ! Not a flake in sight...

VHT Paints are very good in my opinion. Use the right product for the right application and you wont have a problem. I have also used the Hi Temp paint you most likely used. I painted the block and rockercover yellow and no problems.

I thought I had a pic of my manifod but I dont.... Sorry. Its covered by the heat shield in this pic. But you get the idea

ive found the spray stuff works good if you sand blast the rust/entire pipe first and dont touch it with dirty fingers.

I used a white ceramic spray once and it wasnt to bad but it got very dirty quickly.
IM ALWAYS ON THE EDGE, ITS ONLY THE SHARPNESS THAT VARYS

This could be a good advice on curing the exhaust pipe after coating:
