Was quoted that by a prominant yamaha dealer for full replacement parts for the MT clutch. Guessing the R1 might be a lil cheaper with comments rendered.

and then I met a slight problem:



You'll notice only one of the spring nuts is off (the top one)..... because my stupid pissy little 10mm socket driver snapped off (its too small to be attached to the big ass wratchet so it came with little piss-ant poxy yellow platsic screw-driver handle which snapped after 1 second of use, but I was able to use an adjustable spanner to torque the first nut off (attaching the spanner to the handle of the socket tool, not the nut, I aint that silly) until the metal shaft snapped. lol Poxy crap.

So if anyone has a "decent" 10mm socket with a wratchet handle I could borrow, that would be dandy!!

I know, so ive been told. The nice popping sound when the gasket released was a sound of doom!!! , but i've heard of a few hints/tricks when reattaching the push rod to the arm on the crankcase, but....... your words will probably come back to haunt me.

Bunnyboy....I`m pretty sure, when you pull out the clutchplates, there are little steelballs behind the last plate. Make sure you don`t lose them. When you put them back together, they might not stay in place. Just get a bit of grease and hold them in place with it. Not sure if its your model tho...

Steel Balls??!?! good grief!! I dont think so. Ive seen a couple of threads depicting a clutch replacement for the 02-03 model, dont think there are. the last 2 plates are held in with a wire clutch ring that looks like a prick of a thing.

I highly suggest finding the torque settings for any bolts you un-do, and if required, borrow a torque wrench (i have one you can borrow, may even have a 10mm socket).

You really don't want to do what my good mate jez has a habit of... and over-torque/strip threads of anything in there if you can help it

this job is a piece of piss Bunny, Clutch adjustment is easy, just be sure to have 3-5mm of freeplay between the lever and the lever mount ( so you see the clutch cable when the lever is pulled) There are no steel balls there. The spring is the diaphram spring that is held on by the 6 bolts. Once you remove them the pressure plate comes off and try not to drop the pull rod that disengages the clutch. Pay attention to which plates come off in what order. the last fibre plate is a different inside diameter than the rest, it has to go back in that order. Near the most inner plates there is a thin spring that id there to help break the clutch plate seal as it were. If this spring in not in place or has snapped then it will cause the problem you have.

While you have all the plates out measure them up as a group for thickness, you will have to check the dimension in the manual but on the 07 it has to be between 41.3 and 43.2 mm. If it is too thin it will slip, you can buy different thickness steel plates for here. Standard is 2.0 mm, you can get 1.7mm and 2.3mm and you have the option of changing up to 2 of the last plates to get the thickness correct.

Steels rarely wear out. When pulled out and before install always soak fibres in engine oil.


My vote goes with the spring clip near the last clutch plate.


I have spare clutch plates and fibre plates at home if you need something.

Putting the cover back on is easy, don't listen to the German.

If you have doubts Gavin will sort it.

I'd say that would more than likely be for an OEM basket and hub too as well as plates and steels.

Thats only on the later slipper clutch models mate, the steel balls work on the slipper ramps and push the plates/steels apart.
