Are HID (especially yellow) legal in Aus?

Looking at this unit to replace the headlight, preferably with the yellow one. But are they legal here?

Theres a company in Perth that sell quality HID conversion kits, have a look at Delonix Radar

Also be aware that if you are riding in a group you will annoy the hell out of the guy in front of you if your headlight is too bright!

    Short answer, No
Longer answer, If the light is say a 'H3' the lens and reflector has a design of globe that matches, and has been tested to meet ADRs. Changing to a HID globe no longer complies with ADR.

I have had HIDs in my car for 6 years and love them, I also went for the white, as I feel blue, purple, yellow make you stand out. And if the police see a group of bikes, and decide they can only pull over one, standing out is not optimal.

Yeah, you have to have a projector type lens (not the back reflector but the lens)
They must be self levelling (ie little motor adjusting the height of projection - on cars its linked to the rear suspension, put aheavy load in and the lights compensate for the changed angle)
Must have a lens washer installed cos the glare from these things with a dirty lens is painfull to oncoming traffic.

The last 2 on bikes is pretty hard to ovrcome (well maybe installing a washer isnt really that hard but is it worth the effort to make it look right worth the gain)

I have em factory on my GT liberty and love em to bits, driving my dads magna the other night everything was dull yellow.
So yeah all the SS's and skylines etc you see driving around with em are yellow sticker bait.

Conversion kits on sale here only sell the bulb and ballast kits, no lens modifications or anything

Quite a few cars are getting em now, higher end japanese cars (even like a top spec mazda 6, wrx's honda accord euro) then of course most euro cars are getting them like VW etc, but yeah, they all have the 3 criteria, projector lens, self levelling, and lens washers.

New BMW K1600GT-L will have it plus adaptive, ie they point into your turns.

So orignal question, conversion kits are technically illegal, but there are enough hid's out there now its upto you if you reckon its worth the risk.

As said technically no they aren't legal but do it anyway I put them in both H&L beams of my 98 BB about 4 years ago and they are the best safety improvement you can do to a bike I reckon Cars actually see me now rather than pulling out in front of me

It took a little while to get the ideal compromise between effective height and not blinding car drivers in the daytime

I would look at around 5-6000K heat range as that gives a nice white light that is the best for human eyes and gives the most "viewable" light
As said yellow or blue/purple light will attract more attention as the ADR's state the light must be "white"

Go for something 4-6 thousand Kelvin range and higher and it becomes too blue and lower well you might as well stick with the current lights. I went for 6000's on my car and they work wonders.
