    how to fuck a clutch

so what do you think this clutch plate is trying to tell me?

do i need to replace the steels when they're all blue like this, or should it be ok?

clutch was slipping under medium to heavy acceleration in every gear, i measured the fibre plates and springs and they're all well within spec, but i think i'll replace them anyway

Hmmm.......maybe its saying Jenny Craig has a post Xmas special on. Or you could just buy a heap of Carbon Fibre to make it easier for the poor clutch to cope.

I've just ordered an EVR vented pressure plate, caps, stainless bolts and springs. I'm a bit worried that the springs may not be a strong as the standard ones. I wonder if your springs are losing the plot and that's why its slipping.

sand "spokes", not "rings", I'd go 240 grit but that's just me, looks fine.

had similar on my gixxer, i suspect oil starvation, as it was from track use and not wheelies. check for ripples and flatness, hard to see with naked eye. if its flat, sand it, if rippled/unflat/uneven surface bin it.

So any one else hear about not using fully synthetic oil with carbon clutches?

Read about it in rapid bikes couple issues ago in one of their custom builds.

My expert opinion is that the clutch plate is trying to tell you to do more wheelies.

    isnt that normal?

so long as they are not warped and the total stack height is within spec i recycle them just renewing fibres and springs

do not worry about a little bit blue.

check for flatness; stone benchtops are good, just lay them on it and tap with fingers, if you hear a hollow sound its not quite flat.

yes sand lightley a cross hatch pattern with dry 240 grit paper

find the spec for spring tension - should be test length at test force.

wash everything in clean kero - NEVER wash the friction disks with water.

    measure the stack/pack hight.

    check lever adjustment

if eveything measures up good and still slips there are a few ways to make the clutch hold beter.
    increase spring tension.
    increase surface area.
    change friction component.

Put the friction plates in the oven for about 20minutes @ 150 degrees and get the metal plates lightly bead blasted after checking for warping as previously stated.
n.b. Your housemates/partner may complain about oven cooked food tasting weird for a while.

Mix up them up too, replace the plates in a different order and orientation. This way they will wear in different spots.

Blueing of the steels means they have reached some high temps, probably after it started slipping. Like everyone else has said. Just check for warping. I use a sheet of old glass as a flat surface. Replace if needed.
I used to have a nice sig offering to shadow ppl. Now I have no sig...

a good thing to check on old baskets, are those big teeth things on the basket which the tabs on the fibres lock into. they get grooved where the tabs slide back and forth. if they are chopped out doesnt hurt to quickly run some wet and dry across the inside to deburr and lightly chamfer helps keep the tabs from catching and keep the clutch operation smooth.
