how to lube a dirtbike chain?
The missus and I got a pair of cheap and cheerful dirtbikes and went for our first ride yesterday. Cool fun - but a lot harder than I remember it being!
Question is how to lube the chains? I don't like the idea of lube mixing with dust and dirt to form grinding paste - so what to do?

lube like normal - the orings sort out the 'sand/gunk' getting in here and there.
if its a non oring chain, yes, they will wear out after some time. Lube it anyways.

Lube with what? Normal road bike lube? WD40? or what?

Go and get some specified dirt bike lube, all the "top" oil manufacturers are as good as the other, and buy a kettenmax chain cleaning kit.
Use it regularly to prevent your grinding paste scenario.

Used to use the old duckhams lube in a drum put it on the stove and boil the chain in it for a while fantastic for no oring chains

Cool Spock.....it would be interesting to get a dot point for dirt bike maintenance and what to look out for. I know what to do with road bikes, but am a total novice in dirt.

The waxy type chain lube works best because it 'seals' the chain from the outside and prevents sand from getting in...the sticky stuff is inclined to get caked in sand and mud.

Okay, here ya go! (Like many road riders making the transition to dirt, Lolly was worried about using the brakes).

Once we've done a bit more reconnaissance of the area we'll have to organise a dirtbike party up at our place.
In return, you can show us that secret dirtbike route you've found!
