    Unhappy K7 GSXR Generator Issues

    Hey All,

I've got a K7 GSXR 600 with issues with the Generator unit not putting out any charge at all.

The bike only has 16k on the clock and it seems to have died very quickly. I've had a google around and can't seem to see any one else that has had this issue with this model bike.

Things that lead me to this point last night are
    • Battery went flat Sunday
    • Put another battery in the bike rode it home which then went flat
    • Charged battery and put multi meter on which showed drain on the new battery when bike was running
    • No voltage increase under RPM
    • Tested resistance to generator unit and nothing showed up
    • Tested voltage direct from generator unit when bike was running (All 3 wires) with 0 output from any
    • Had a beer and went in side to contemplate my options
So words of advise on anything else I can test before going to purcahse a new unit for it.

Was really looking forward to the High-Tech Titles @ the Motorplex this weekend so need to get it sorted before then!!!

    Regards,

You might be able to get it rewound locally now you did test the stator output with AC on the multimeter and not DC? Pretty much if you are getting nothing out of the stator its the stator. There are resistance tests some manufacturers supply values for that can be carried out on the stator but they will be buried in the workshop manual and it varies from bike to bike the values are typically very low so don't forget to test the leads for any resistance and take that value off any reading you get. Did you test between the stator windings and ground when you were doing the resistance checks?

Voltage test was on AC and tested the battery etc from the same mode to make sure readings were occurring.

Tested resistance from the stator from all 3 different points and there was nothing. (just like the stator was not connected to any of the 3 wires *one of those 3 being earth)

I have the workshop manual for the bike and checked the resistance as listed.

Haven't tested the stator windings to ground as I left the cover on (at this point) it's about the only thing I have not done yet.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Umm you stator produces AC the regulator rectifier at your battery produces DC the stator will put out northwards of 50 volts so you need a range to cover that and when charging the system should put out around 14.5 volts DC. WHat were the results of your resistance tests? did it pass/fail?

    Failed resistance test

Bike should be pushing 65v from 6000rpm had the meter on max of 100v and got squat from it.

Just called Suzuki about the price of a new Stator unit, $500 inc GST :/

Guy there said to check the Coil pulse pickup as the Stator unit should not be dead after 16k.

Going to refer to the manual tonight for some info on that and have a poke around.

    Wish me luck!

My stator died after 30k, so its possible yours could be gone.

Ok so story goes, borrowed another multimeter from work and it now seems mine was not mesuring AC voltage @ all (tested it on my car last night to confirm).

Voltage from the alternator is fine, so moved onto the next step was the regulator, tested that and it seems that the reulator is out of specs on the diode test meaning it's the issue!!!

Going to be calling Suzuki tomorrow and seeing if they have any in stock. I freaking hope they can get me one by the weekend!!!!

If you can find out the wattage/current rating there are some aftermarket ATV regs that do the job for a fraction of the OEM price.
