    mileage on a 1000

hi guys, im in the market for a bigger bike, around the 1000cc mark... but i have some requirements to fill... im doin a fair bit of mileage riding to and from uni, and next year will be living in kalgoorlie and most likely riding to and from perth.. so im looking for something reliable and comfortable on longer distances... my first question is for the general cbr1000, r1, gsxr1000 type sports bikes what is considered high kms..? most that are in the age and price range that i want are around the 20,000km mark.. im thinkin that in the next 2 or so years i will probly add on about 30-40,000 kms so i want somehtin that will last me that time... i have considered a cruiser but after having an R6 i think i would get bored very quick... so any suggestions as to a comfortable reliable and most importantly fun bike would be of help.. and any stories of bikes with massive mileage just to giv me some confidence would be interesting! cheers fellas, oh and seeing as im lookin to buy son, if you have a bike for sale that you think would suit then give me a call, 0439 994 237

modern bikes nowadays will easily do 100k if looked after properly.

if you want are more comfortable bike but still fun, try looking at sport tourer type bikes like the blackbird or something similar.

I don't think the CBR/R1/ZX10/GSXR are going to fit your bill of being comfortable on longer distances, especially around Kal as the are big straight roads. That's not to say they are uncomfortable it's just there are other bikes that might enter the equation like duallies (BMW/Triumph Tiger/Suzi V-stom 650) or dirties etc. To that point my VTR has just hit 70,000km and it going along, any of those bikes (with regular servicing) should have no issues with high km on them.

yer iv thort about the vtr, the sp versions would be wikid but they r out of my range... looking to spend around 8 grand.. just wondering tho, the normal vtr1000, r they easy to get on the bak wheel, lots of torque..? iv thort of getting a motard cos they are heaps of fun, and the lack of good top speed means im more likely to keep my licence...

^ VTR1000 for less than 7k, with ~60 on the clock.

I have a mate who has a VTR with 110k on it, and it just threw it's cam-chain tensioners and mashed the valves into the pistons. It's had a hard life though - trips to and around Philip Island, and having to put up with the way my mate rides it

I think I'd be looking at a Blackbird...

blackbird would be lovely, but im only bout 5,8 so way too small for that bike, i have sat on one at a dealer and although the seat is like a lounge chair, i have to lean too far forward to get to the bars... it is a shame cos there is one on bikesale.com.au with 30,000km on it and goin for 6 grand... tempted, but not practical

As has been said, any modern bike should do those ks. The Jap bikes in general are very reliable. That said - the one brand most reknowned for having a strong engine is Honda. Each brand has it's own little quirks and weaknesses, though.

One thing you have to consider is resale. You'll most likely take a bit of a hit when it's time to move the bike on as people get nervous about high kms. Just make sure you keep accurate servicing records and receipts so you can prove the bike has been well looked after.

Gixxer thou! Comfy enough for long trips, 250km's out of a tank easy at 'highway speeds'. Darn near bulletproof.

You definately dont want a motard, the wind buffeting you would snap your head off by about Merredin. Unless you go an adventure type its like sitting on a plank of wood, ok for 50k's then it starts hurting bad...

stuff the cruisers..... If its "something reliable and comfortable on longer distances."

Bandit 1250, xjr1300 & if you can afford it FJR1300.
    Blackbird is another good option.

I had a 1999 yamaha R1 for three years and saw it pass the 100 000k mark with a thrashing. The thing still ran fine with nothing more than required maintainance, 2nd gear was on the way out though. Sold it to a mate who gave it a freshen up and it's still on the road today.

Go the Blackbird if you can do it, it's MADE for what you're wanting to do - apart from an all-out cruiser of course.

I had the Blackbirds little brother, a CBR1000F. That would fit your bill perfectly if you couldn't go for the BB, but they are getting a bit long in the tooth nowadays. Regular maintenence should see you right for many a year on either of them too.

As for other bikes, there's so many to choose from, but I will say that you should steer away from a twin, the vibrations get a little annoying

One thing to bear in mind is if you rack up heaps of km on a late model bike it can destroy its resale

I would look at something like a z750 or similar to ride into the ground. You could get a low km one of those for the depreciation over two years and 60000km on a 16k thou superbike

I've just been looking at bikepoint. 98-99 Superblackbirds start at 5k, and you can get one with less than 40 thou on the clock for under 7. And apparently they'll manage 280-290km on a tank.

I think I've found my next bike.

my 600, which has a higher revving, and thus (in theory) shorter lasting motor than a thou in it has 45,000km on it.

    and its still tight.

i wouldn't be too concerned with racking up a few 10s of thousands of kays. I think kermit (gryphen's bike) has 100k+ on it? i remember him posting up the 99,999 photo or something a couple of years back?

as g0zer said, it will kill your resale... but i'd suggest its things like chains, sprockets, suspension, brake discs and steering head bearings that will take the majority of the flogging, rather than the engine....
    stuff

yer thanks for the feedback guys. the gsxr is tempting, i think i will give him a call. im not too fussed about the damage, at least it wont bother me if i put another scratch on it. and yes i know high miles kills your resale but if you keep the bike for 2 years and use it all the time then really ur just getting ur moneys worth from it i recon... resale value dropping is inevitable so theres not much point fussing over it... does anyone have experience from riding a K7 gsxr1000... comfortable??? cheers

Owned an 07 and have a 08 now. If I'm riding round doing the speed limit 110 on country road's, I get sore as anything. I need to be having some fun with corner's for it to be comfortable. I'm a short ass to. I would be looking at a sport tourer for the kal to perth trip's. That's my opinion on a GSXR.
