My K2 GSX-R 1000 had 76000+kms on it when I had it compression tested and it scored AWESOME across all four cylinders. I would have easily seen 100000+ if it hadn't been killed by a car.

The fuel economy/range was brilliant, too, for a sportsbike. I would see over 250kms before the fuel light came on, and once got over 330kms out of a tank.

Get an old Suzuki Bandit 1200S (GSF 1200S).

    - The air/oil cooled motor is legendary for being indestructable.
    - More comfy than a pure sportsbike.
    - For long country commuting you can put a smaller sprocket on the back and be cruising at a little less than 4000rpm / 110kph.
    - Fuel use should be around 5 litres / 100km.
    - Huge torque at low rpm - pulls like a train.
    - Cheap to buy 2nd hand (they only cost $12K brand new), so won't depreciate much.
    - Has enough fairing and luggage capacity (with rack) to carry you anywhere in style.
    - They are a little on the heavy side, but this helps keep things straight when pushing through the wind-wave pushed out by passing trucks.

Or if you can afford it, buy a new 1250. You can get them for around $12K ride away

    Hi Olliekent,

Not sure if you've made a decision on a bike yet. As the guys have mentioned, a Blackbird is a pretty good choice for a comfy sports tourer. If you haven't bought anything , it may be worthwhile looking at something with shaft drive as maintaining the chain/sprockets requires care and effort. Shafties tend to be hit the button and go and should have fairly long service intervals on the drive components.

Good luck in your next choice of bike.

    ^^^ hmm...

while a chain + sprockets requires more than zero effort.... its not that bad.

My last set got cleaned a total of twice, mostly only adjusted when i needed new tyres (and the wheel was off anyway), and a quick spray with lube when it looked dry - and lasted about 36,000km.

YMMV of course, but I wouldn't consider that to be such a pain. If you go chain/sprockets, you can easily change the gearing, too.
    stuff

i have a gixxer k8 put a set of heli hi-rise bars and a puig racing screen on it, made a huge difference in riding comfort.awsome bike, not bad on fuel, you would need to do something with the seat...it numbs your ass after a couple of hours riding...

I can say with a definite yes that the VTR's will get on the back wheel as I looked at one when getting back into bikes after 11 years and lofted the front on the test ride without even trying
I think fro what I know of them though that the fuel economy/tank range would be a bit of a pain in the arse
Also being only a semi faired bike there will be more wind drag than a full faired bike

^ VTR1000 for less than 7k, with ~60 on the clock.

I have a mate who has a VTR with 110k on it, and it just threw it's cam-chain tensioners and mashed the valves into the pistons. It's had a hard life though - trips to and around Philip Island, and having to put up with the way my mate rides it

I think I'd be looking at a Blackbird...
Most bikes should be bulletproof to over 100 000km these days IF properly maintained My 98 BB is now @ ~97500km and all I have done apart from general maintenance/mods is replace the Reg/Rec at ~51 000km.
I do have a spare CCT tensioner (~$50) to replace the existing one if it gets too noisy as they get extremely noisy long before failing so can only imagine the VTR's one was very bad before failing

You can get various other bars to help with the reach
I have the VFR VTech bars on mine (not because I'm short @ 6'1" but because I have a bit of a gut which increases the reach ) but there are HeliBars, Convertibars and Gilles Variobars
The CVB & GVB can actually take the clip ons higher than the stock lines allow if that is what you want but need replacement front brake lines and throttle cables, the VFR & HeliBars will fit with no mods and raise the bars ~42mm, bring them back ~25mm and are ~38mm wider
You can also get GenMar or Jaws bar risers that will raise the std bars ~28mm
Also you can get the bike lower but dropping the forks through the triples and adjusting the shock link plates if you really want to but I know of plenty of guys on various BB sites that are shorter than 5'8'' and have no problem + you can get the seat modded to lower the height
You can pick up a lowish (~30 000km) 99-01 model for around 8K these days

    Blackbird is another good option.
All good choices for comfy "mile eaters" as the Yanks like to say
Although for lots of higher speed highway stuff the lack of fairings on the older Bandits and the XJR will mean extra buffeting

I think I've found my next bike.
There are guys on the OzBB site with later model FI Birds that have gotten nearly 400km to a tank while highway cruising
The later models are down a fraction on power but have slightly more midrange rather than top end HP so that probably helps fuel economy as well as less wear than the carbs
I was getting ~350km to empty when I got mine and now only around 300km Could be combo of wear and the lower gearing although may have a bit to do with the right wrist as well

buy my zx9 almost a 1000cc more of a sports tourer than a sports bike. can keep up with the 1 lt bikes . better for the long distance rides then the super sports.

Hmmm... regular VTR1000 i thought was pretty gutless. and thats coming off a 600 (it had less than expected torque down low, nothing up top). could have been due to the weight.

your milage may vary i guess.... maybe my expectations were just a bit high.
