Milky Oil, or how to do a compression check

I Haven't ridden my GSXR600 in about a year, so I thought I'd do an oil change but to my horror I noticed that the oil is milky looking, like a pink milkshake. Looking on the GSXR forum it's either the head gasket/head or apparently the GSXR600 sometimes had the water pump seal let go which sounds plausible because I noticed that last track session my left boot was getting oil on it, which is right near the water pump.

But anyway Is there a rough guide on how to do a compression test? Like how can I turn the motor over without it firing up, or the fuel injectors flooding it?

Belive it or not but what your looking for is actully a compression tester, funny that.
I think most people who would own one might just be the same people who charge for there knowlage of mechanican and the likes.
There will be a few here that would have one though.

From my little bit of thinking, there is water in the oil, not oil in the water , so My guess is you have either been eating ice cream or blown a seal.
This would be my way arround check hows the coolant, dump oil,( change seal) flush oil,
If it looks like a head gasket, you could sniff it out, but with that much coolant that the oil is emulsified,
the bike would have tolled you its not fealing well.

Maybe a nice psber will lend you a compression tester or even show you how to use it.

Can you post a pic of the colour?

Disconnect the crank sensor. Or find a shop manual, it will have a guide on which fuse to pull etc.

You are looking for a leak between the cooling system and the oil system. Compression test is more useful when you are getting water into a cylinder.
If there is no missfire, compression will probably be fine.

You should get hold of a radiator pressure tester instead.

I have a compression tester also, i also have the extension tube that makes it easier to access tighter spaces so your gauge can be right out the way for easy reading. i also have a few different adapter nozzles for diff size holes.

Not got the water tester though.

have you checked the water level of your radiator, is it low. is that where the water is from? have you got any oil in the radiator?

If you have not ridden the bike for a year then i would not be surprised if condensation hasnt gotten into your engine and started to mix with your oil. also if left for a year i would imagine the oil would be shit anyway.

I.e If you leave oil in a pot on the side uncovered for a year, it would go similar, OK your bike is not open the same way but it is designed to breath so condensation can form in the engine, hence why your supposed to turn it over regularly, get it up to temp. even if your not riding it..

If you need help let me know. i am willing to help.
But i am road pilot so i am all over the place.

Yeah there was no oil in the water when I dumped it, so I'm leaning more towards this

Oil leak at water pump fix : Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycle Forums: Gixxer.com

As I posted in there I've been getting more and more oil sprayed on the top of my left boot while riding, and the left boot just happens to sit underneath the water pump. As for a compression tester I was just going to get one from supercheap or the like, but thanks for the offers everyone, I'll keep you updated!

With stuff like pressure testers. you get what you pay for. if your gona get a cheap one expect it not to give accurate readings all the time. and the like.

That was actually going to be my next suddestion. ha ha. water pump seal.

Good luck. keep us posted and again if you need help. let me know.

If you can get the bike to me i got loads of tools and a bike hoist.

Hrm either good news or bad news, the good news is It looks like the water pump seal, I pulled it off and could see the trail of water leaking out of it, the bad news, It's been like this for awhile I think, as I only ride it at the track and I noticed the motor does seem to vibrate a bit, water in oil is hell for the bearings is there anyway of checking without doing a teardown ( borescope? )

Or I was just gonna put some fresh oil in it, fix the seal and see how it goes, it doesn't knock or make any unusual sounds, just some vibration.

do that.. put fresh oil in and see how it goes..

if it runs like shit then you've done a bearing.. or not put it together right. cross the bridge when you get to it.

    No

Would pay to check the oil pressure after the leak is sorted.

You can get a sample of the oil tested for traces of bearing.
Never had it done myself, but I believe Redline in Osborne Park do it.

Cheers, I posted this on the GSXR forum but would anyone know where to get all the seals required? Also you need a special tool to remove one of the mechanical ones, but I can't find part numbers. I'm thinking It'd be easier just to buy a new pump.

When you said you hadn't ridden it for a year, did you start it up before the oil change? Just wondering if water has been trickling in there for the last nine months and if you started it and ran for a couple of minutes it might have mixed the water through the oil turning it into a milkshake but not long enough to do any damage.

you would be suprised how much the white metal bearings can take. but yes about the only easy way to check them is by checking your oil pressure (not that it will be a perfect way) and listen to it running and feel how it rides.

seems like you have it sussed, but for future referance, if your coolant is clean (especially under the cap) it is proably not going to be a head gasket. coolant max 15 / 16 psi, oil 35 - 85 PSI.
