    Power commander trouble

Installing a power commander on a R1 2006. When bike is turned on the power commander lights up and does a system check. But after it finishes it doesnt look like it still has power. The power commander 3 on my cbr has one bar lit when its powered up. The power commander on the R1 doesnt have this. Anyone have any tips? I have cleaned the connections. While doing this i noticed the factory plugs dont have as many pins and holes as the power commander does. There are 2 blank pins and holes on each factory plug, where the power commander has these pins and holes on its plugs. The power commander says its for an 05 r1. That should work on an 06 R1?

    Any tips boys and girls?

turn the bike on and once the light has gone out try plugging a laptop into it and see if it can comunicate. If it is off it shouldnt and if it is on it should.

04-06 R1 PCIII is part #411-411 so should be OK.

The unit *could* have a fault. How old is it ?

Using a good ground connection ?

You have to use the 9v battery for it to communicate

grounded on the battery. PC does not communicate with pc3. I just got it from motor cycle masters in kewdale yesterday.
if its a grounding issue would it still lightup initially? The bike wont start. So far the only thing i can think of is trying a different grounding point.
I really want to exhaust all options before going back to these guys, they have a great rep and know what they are doing.

Will it start with the PC3 disconnected?? The pc will ONLY communicate with pc3 for 04-06 R1 if the 9V battery is plugged in.

Im pretty sure your wrong, While I dont have that bike, my pc3 it comunicates fine without the battery when the bike is running.

OP when you say turn the bike on, are talking about just turning the key to on or are you talking about after you start the bike?

So halo_2 you are saying that on the 04-06 R1 the 9v battery has to plugged in to get it to talk to the pc?
The bike starts fine without pc3. Turn the key and the bike makes all the right noises, the pc3 lights up, the light moves up and down the panel. The light then sits at the bottom and turns off.
My pc will communicate with the pc3 on my cbr without the battery. I dont want to start the bike without the right map anyway.

Yep, if you dont have the 9v module just shove cable into the hole in pc3 and wrap around terminals on 9v battery

    Pin Layout

or those with power commander usb 9V battery cables : KawiForums.com Kawasaki Forums: Kawasaki motorcycle forums

The pc3 lights up, the light moves up and down the panel. The light then sits at the bottom and turns off. (Corrrect) Once you got the bike started it will light back up and when you rev lights move up and down.

Once you got it pc3 communicating to pc, change map, update firmware and TPS Setting (To set TPS Setting you have to have to bike turned on (not running though), it will give you a close reading (fluctuates) click left arrow then open throttle up 100% will give you another reading (fluctuates) click right arrow. Then OK button

Just a side note - and not quite a thread hijack...

I have an 04 R1 and noticed that the pc3 plug power is "mains" so when I send a map over - I just ensure the bike is running.

Problem I have is that I have updated my firmware - didn't take note that the existing firmware was less than 1.0.0.20 and now I have nothing (rofl). Power commander suggest that I take it to a service centre and they can upload the new firmware. I wanted to dyno the bike as well - will the dynotune dudes also update the firmware?

the 9v thing worked. the pc read the map that was on there. it said 2004 r1 with stock exhaust and airfilter. I have down loaded maps but cant use them. It wont let me load them up. i think this has something to do wth firmware maybe? the pc doesnt recogise them as pc3 maps. any advice?

Are you using european 411 or 421 maps and you need to extract them with winrar or run the map file (exe file) when you download them.

Once its all working, update firmware, change tps settings to suit your bike, check cylinder trim value is all 0%, click reset button values

    Guide may help

Did you save the stock map ? remove the maps you installed and reinstall the stock one and see what happens.
Some say he eats sidchrome for breakfast

Some say he only showers on even days of the week

Some say he put an R1 motor in a coffee machine

All we know is he's Hewie.
