ok was just wondering if i start the bike up without a back wheel on and up on stands will the motor turn the chain over, and if so is there a simple solution to counteract this as i really need to check the fueling and dont have a tire yet.

neutral shouldn't transfer any power.. if it does theres something fubared in the bike.

k awesome im convined, thanks guys.
then why must one apply pressure to the back wheel to start some bikes, or is that on kickstarts? also ive observed gp racers using a motorised spinner to roll the engine over from the back wheel. i was just trying to be really cautiouse.

Yes I'm sure, that why it's called neutral ie. the gearbox is not engaged in any way and therefor there is no drive to the front sprocket.

Yes generally it will move the chain, even in neutral. Speed will depend on revs and will tend to spin up when the engine is cold (and the oil is cold, which is the cause). Obviously not like it's in gear, but it will move.

thats both 2 strokes and 4 stroke race bikes with no starter motor.
your bike should be all good to go buddy, but as always if in doubt ask a question.
Cheers

Thats strange, I know when my bike is on its centrestand in nuetural, and I give it some gas, the rear wheel spins.
Now it dosn't spin really fast, but I would want to know how much more it is going to try and turn when there is no wheel on the back.
I hould hate to see someone get hurt listening to advice that people are not 100% on.
Have you thought about removing the chain, that was if anything dose move it will only be the front sprocket?

I should add that it generally won't spin on idle when cold, only when you increase the revs a few thou.

I'd be more worried about a chain not connected to a rear sprocket causing damage.
If you secure the chain you will be fine. You won't need a lot of force, but secure it nonetheless so you don't damage anything.

Those of you saying the rear wheel won't move.....have you actually tried it?
Like Nads/Lee said. Take the chain off. You're almost that far anyway.

Yeah it will still turn really slowly, but only because of vibration.
I.E. if you put your foot on it while it was turning it will stop but when you take your foot away the wheel will start rotating again.

any resistance the chain meets will stop the rotation, well as least on the 3 bikes i've owned it has.
i'm in half the mind to think it's only a resonant frequency or something causing it to rotate, because the amount of force required to stop it moving was sweet fuck all. probably not though.
Cheers
Alex
