    Re-gluing handebar grips

An easy one (hopefully). Left handlebar grip is starting to come loose but otherwise in good nick. I figure I just need to push a bit of glue in to get it to re-stick - right?

I'm not a glue expert and haven't done this before so I'm looking for any advice as to what type of glue to use (Araldite? Superglue? Quik-grip?). Also any tips on how to do to it best?

    Cheers!

Ah....I have never used glue. The problem will be when you come to remove the grip (in the future). You will have made the task even harder.

The grip should be 'difficult' to put on without any outside assistance of another substance. I have used CRC/WD40 (in small doses), and twisted/pushed the grip on with that. Other web sites have suggested hair spray (it dries with a slight adhesive content).

If the grip you are using is going on too easily....then it's time for new grips.

Glad I asked before diving in. I just assumed they are glued on and that this one just needed re-gluing. Now I know they are supposed to be push fits and not glued I'll re-investigate.

    Thanks!

Hairspray is the go - it lubricates the rubber so that they slide on easy & dries like a light contact adhesive which makes them easier to get off than "real glue".

The instructions for my neoprene Harris grips said Methylated Spirits. Worked great. I don't keep hairspray as I'm not a chick

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried the hairspray but it didn't work for me. After three days the grip was still just rotating freely.

So I pulled it off again (very easily) cleaned it all up with meths, let it dry and got the grip back on with nothing other than compressed air to inflate it a bit. That has worked a treat - the grip has now stuck like dog sh!t to a blanket.

I wire them on. They will not move at all. The wire isn't anything special you can buy it from bunnings or wherever.

You will need pliers, side cutters and wire. Do this on each end of the grip. I also do the middle but it's your bike do what you want.

    Wrap the wire around once.

    Twist by hand.
    13_initial_twist.jpg
Use your pliers (needle nose or standard pliers) to twist the wire a few more times with some good tension. If you over tension the wire will break no biggie the grip will be fine.

It should look a bit like.
    15_twisted_wire.jpg
Then cut the excess with side cutters. You only need a few turns.
    16_cutting_wire.jpg
Use the pliers or a hammer or what ever to push the point down out of the way and you are done. When it comes to remove it simply cut the wire with side cutters and use a box cutter to cut the grip off.

Best way I have found to put grips on is to put them in hot water and leave them for five minutes. They will slightly expand and become softer which makes it a lot easier to put on.
    Spoiler: show

Did you clean the inside of the grip before trying the hairspray? I've had dust and crap work its way inside the grip so cleaning was essential and then hairspray to help slide on.

Similar to Lit I've used those fine cable-ties to give some extra security but you have to line the joiner up with the gap in your fingers. In the end I went for those grips with clamps.

    compressed air FTW.

push the grip on a little bit, and then blow away. you sometimes need to 'seal' the end of the grip around the nozzle by hand, but once it moves on a bit, just push the end of the air gun between the grip and bar...

the grip expands, and then relaxes, back to its tight as a fishes arse state, and because it goes on straight, and stress free, you dont get twists in your grip pattern.
    season 2012 is coming.....

Works well as long as the other grip is on ... and doesn't blow off! Or you have a friend who is happy to jam his appendage in the other end of the bars.

Bad advice agrid, the friend might end up with an inflated appendage and not be able to get it back out.

Oh did you mean a finger? Nevermind then....... as you were
