Replacing a Gear Shifter - Need help. Lots of it.

so i dropped my bike the other night, slow speed, just cosmetic damage really. but the gear shifter is bent now so that it digs into my toe and has left a blister through my boot (a small one after an entire day of riding, so not the biggest problem, but would still rather it be fixed)

and anyway, i was thinking instead of sending the bike to a mechanic (like i have for everything else thats gone wrong...) i could just get the part online and attach it myself. but i dont know how to do it..
being the total bike noob that i am, i was wondering if anyone else has attached a gear lever before and if they could walk me through the steps of how to detach/attach it. i was looking at the workings of it all today but couldnt really see how it fitted together - i really dont know much/anything about the mechanics of bikes so any help would be appreciated!

also anyone know of cheap gear shifters online? i found an aftermarket one for 33ish dollars, but have found that hyo brand shifters sell for $60-$70? what would you recommend? will there be a difference?

    thanks in advance!

you can usually straighten these with a big shifting spanner or ringy . just bend it back into position .

    What Falcore said.
Google it and read the forum talk about aftermarket Hyo stuff- I wouldn't go there put it that way.
If you cant see how it works from looking at it, my advise is take it to Dale Brittons. They probably stick a few hundred on a year, that and indicators and mirrors lol.

It's generally very easy, most applications are the same. Just involves undoing the rearset from the bike itself, disconeccting the rod from the actual gear shifter, then you will have the rearset off the bike. The peg that you rest your foot on may be either bolted to the rearset or alternatively there may be a split pin holding it in. Remove, replace and do the opposite to fit back on. It's honestly very easy to do.

Alternatively, depending on your bike you may just have the type of shifter that comes straight off the spline which is even reasier! Just undo the Allen bolt or nut and take it out, then use a flat bladed screwdriver in the gap where the bolt brings the gear lever together to open it up and loosen it a little, and use your other hand to pull the lever off. Again, reversal to put it back on

ive tried googling all sorts of things for it but i cant find anything helpful. i really dont want to take it in to dale brittons as i am wretchedly poor..
i'd wanna save them for a last resort. i was really just hoping that someone could do like step-by-step guide?
or if theres one already on the internet that i cant find if they could post it on here?

Apart from staring at it from a distance, and hoping that the world will drop everything to help you... (which I'm sure some kind members here on PSB may...), have you actually evaluated it yourself? Have a close look at the shifter, work out what is attached to where on the bike, the order you would have to take things off and put them on.... the tools you may require (only you know the tools you have available) etc?

Put in the effort yourself, step-up and have a go. Its amazing the feeling of accomplishment that you get if you do the work yourself, and with something this easy (it is very easy), it may give you the confidence to do something else... until you can actually service and maintain your own bike, making it safer for you to ride and evaluate, rather than waiting for the obligatory 6 month/6000 km service interval and taking it to a mechanic.

No probs buddy! Just take photos for reference is my best piece of advice! Oh, and also the rod that connects the gear lever to the spline on the side of the engine - take note of its resting position i.e. the angle it sits at, as you will have to spin the rod once all put back together to adjust where the lever sits (quite important you do this for a) comfort and b) It will affect how smooth it goes up and down gears). Hope this helps! I agree with blackFZR above by the way, always worth having a crack!

borrow a service manual from someone if you can ... it normally shows something like a shift lever in step by step process.

I've had to do it in the past on my Hyo. From what I remember it's actually and very easy task to do. If you find yourself struggling with it I could probably give you a hand. If need be just send me a pm. Also I would probably stick with a hyo brand one, that way you know it will fit as aftermarket stuff can always be a bit iffy.

thanks for the help guys - im happy to do it myself, its just i dont know what bolts screw on what and i dont want to take out a nut and have the engine falling out...
so far ive taken off the rearset.. pretty easy. and now i've encountered more problems. problem. Theres a screw holding it in that i dont know how to undo.
Successful career in mechanics ahead of me i suspect.. but yeah, heres some pics of it

You see the two lugs on the clip in the lower picture? You need to pull them apart to get them off, I usually use a flat headed screwdriver to seperate them and then use another one to lift one side up and over the top of the foot peg that it's holding in if you get me? just take your time and be gentle, you don't want it snapping!
