    Seized Engine Woes

Bought myself another V-Strom at the auctions. When I looked at it there was no oil in it but thought I would take a punt on it anyway. Looks like I might of stuffed up. Got it home and filled it with oil and put a new battery in and the thing won't start. The starter motor engages but it seems to not spin the engine. It just goes clunk. Tried roll starting it down my steep driveway but when you drop the clutch on it in second it just compression locks the back wheel and slides. So I am thinking seized engine. No idea where to go from here. I am pretty confident I can drop the motor myself but who does rebuilding in Perth? I was thinking of taking it down to a dealer just to confirm it is seized. Any suggestions? It is a 650 and I think it uses the same engine as the SV650. Not 100% sure if it uses same compression or how it is tuned. I am pretty sure it is more setup for bottom end torque than top end power. Worst case scenario I will keep it for a parts bike for my other one.

You thought you'd turn it over even though it didn't have any oil in it?

It had no oil in it when he bought it. He added oil before trying anything.

Still, it was a bit of a gamble buying a bike that had no oil in it.

I misread the "taken a punt at it" bit. Sounds like it's siezed. High possibility if it was left running on its side. Start checking ebay for replacement donks. Usually mighty expensive to rebuild.

Yeah I added oil before trying to start it. Not a complete retard. Only a slight retard for buying a bike with no oil.

pull the plugs out, remove the timing inspection plug on the right hand side, get a socket onto the bolt on the end of the crankshaft. turn clockwise. it should take very little force.
sounds like it has starved and seized, but thats an easy way to check.

if thats the case, drop the engine and open her up to get an idea of the damage. work out what needs replacing and if its cheaper to rebuild or replace.
labour is always the killer with these sort of things. buy a manual, buy some beer, invite mechanically minded mates around and do it cheap.
    Respect is earned, not enforced.

Why didn't you try and roll it at the auction to see if it turned over?
And drop the motor and rebuild it yourself, it's not that hard at all.

Not much room to roll it at the auctions. Gave it a quick roll but it's a bit hard to drop the clutch on it. Seized engine is a problem but it gives me a chance to pull it apart anyway. All good fun.
