    Question Electrical MODs for motorcycles

Self cancelling indicator MOD. Anyone else thought about this for their bike?

Im an electrical accessories fitter by trade, and want to do more electrical MODs to my bike and thought of this today.

Have sort of an idea how to do it, but Im sure it will take a lot of work.

    Thoughts, anyone?

    F2K.

EDIT: the above is not a great idea. What other cool electrical MODs have people done/thought about..?

I may have a 30 year old self cancelling module that I removed when I rewired my bike. If I can find it, you can have it.

Personally I think its a bad idea, if you make it work perfectly and learn to depend on it, every time you ride a different bike you may forget to turn off the indicators.

If someone thinks you are turning they are more likely to pull out on you.

Edit: You could make a reminder device to let you know they are on. How about designing a flashing light on the instruments to remind you they are on.

I'd rather turn it off myself, that way I know it's off. But good luck to ya!

The factory unit worked on both a timer and speedometer pulse counter. The owners manual says they would self cancel after 10 seconds or 150 meters.

I was thinking more of switches, which could well be very unreliable.

This looks similar to what youre talking bout DF

    That module looked fine until I read this bit;

Mode 1 : Press turn signal button for 1 second, turn signal lights will flash for 7 seconds, then self cancel. This mode is usually used when changing lanes.
Mode 2 : Press turn signal button for 2 seconds, turn signal lights will flash for 20 seconds, then self cancel. This mode is usually used when slowing down to go around a corner.
Mode 3 : Press turn signal button for 4 seconds, turn signal lights will flash for 75 seconds, then self cancel. This mode is usually used when stopping at a signal light and turn will be made after stopping.
Press right indicator for 4 seconds when you decide to turn at lights?

    What was the designer thinking?

Ah you have found brake light modulators.
Pretty sure they are not legal, and adding a $10 ebay item to a bikes brake light circuit is a point I would ponder for about a second before deciding - NO

Old yamaha RZ250/350's supposedly had self canceling indicators, the would work on distance and time i think, althouhg my brain isnt working well enough to see how they could work on time, ill have a look through the manual one day if i think of it. They have a module that hooks into the harness and a sender in the speedo unit. Ive had a few of these bikes over the years, and never seen one work yet haha

AFAIK brake light modulators are legal as long as the pulse rate is within a certain parameter My old CB750F had self cancelling indicators and after being off bikes for ~11 years I took a while to get used to the Bird not having them
I like the idea of having them just as a backup for not doing it yourself, I've gotten into the habit of pushing the button every so often to make sure they're off, particularly in busy traffic

    My FZR600 had self-cancelling indicators.

If you can't remember that you have your indicator on maybe you need to replicate the indicator light on your instruments to somewhere where you can see it a bit more? And put a buzzer on as well.

I'm a multi-indicator pushie too - always checking that its off because I know how distracting it can be for riders behind. But my Bmw has an auto switch that turns the indicator off after a certain number of seconds. Will have to see after how many today

Why not find some useful mods to do, rather than modifying perfectly working things or creating redundant/problematic ones?
