    Smoke coming from exhaust

    Ok

Came back from my trip to Phillip island and my slow oil leak seems to have grown. I put oil in it before heading to work on Wednesday morning. All seems to be fine although a bit sluggish ( 6 days of no use). Go to start the bike after work and get nothing. Get it trailered back to the house and start work on it today.

Drop the oil and replace it with 2.4ltrs of new stuff. Replace the sump plug that was causing the oil leak. Charge the battery and it starts first time. Only problem I have now is a shit load of smoke on start up. I turn it off after about 5 seconds. Decide to start it again to see if it's just a little bit of smoke due to the oil change. Leave it running for about 15 seconds and the smoke goes away. Give it a few blips on the throttle and the smoke is back with each twist but settles when idle.

Don't want to keep it running in case I fuck something up so was hoping to get a bit of advice as to what to do next from the wise individuals of PSB.

    Cheers

Don't know the back-story sorry. What colour is the smoke? Are there bubbles or muck in the coolant? What do the spark plugs look like? What bike?

08 R6. Smoke is blueish I suppose. Coolant is fine. Have not checked the spark plugs yet.

Ok. Been out to have another look at it and have noticed oil coming out of the second header pipe and burning off. Not sure what that means.

Could be valve guides or rings. Worn valve guides or leaky valve stem seals cause smoke on startup but then runs fine. A compression test might help determine if the rings are shot.

If I run it for 5-10mins will there be a possibility of me making things worse? Wondering if it will just burn off and settle back to normal....

How much smoke, clouds that hang around? Should be OK for the engine, but is it injected, and if so is there an oxygen sensor? O2 sensors can be troubled by oil contamination.
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

The smoke does hang about a bit but I started it in the garage. It does have an O2 sensor that was rerouted to another box after installing my aftermarket exhaust a few months ago.

Sounds like the head gasket. More revs = more oil pressure.

Edit: Ignore. What a stupid suggestion.

if you have oil of any kind on your pipes (including oily finger prints) they tend to smoke a bit.

as long as it's not coming from the exhaust tip, that would be internal. From the headers then look above them starting from a leaky rocker cover gasket.

To try to pin point use talk powder and dust over area you think it's from and leave it sit, oil will leave a snail trail, once found wash talk off before running bike.

Is it just coincidence that it has started now or is it possibly stemming from something else?
Have a day off tomorrow so will replace the rings first and take it from there.

Stemming from the stems would have been my first guess. Especially if the problem goes away quickly.

Rings as in Piston rings? Seems a bit extreme when it's just as likely to be the top end. Compression testing as suggested above would be a simple first step, and checking the plugs at the same time.

    Ok

Replaced the gasket rings from the pipes to the head. Still getting the same problem. Checked the engine oil and it's at about half now whereas it was full when I changed the oil yesterday. No oil leaks on the ground.

Don't suppose anyone is free today to give a helping hand? :-)

Does anyone have a compression tester I could borrow today?

did you change the filter? I have a vague memory of overfilling the oil causing a similar problem. 2.4 litres would be with a filter change.(edit : may be unlikely now you say it's now half) , the oil on your exhaust, it it coming from your rocker cover gasket?

just remembered on another modern bike an oil overfill issue and the oil went through the breather into the airbox. and caused excessive smoking .

not being funny but every one has different ideas, did you put the oil in here?
