    Too much oil

Just changed the oil in my R1 and was riding and noticed every now and then it would blow white smoke. When I stopped I noticed that the oil level was too high in the window.

Is too much oil going to cause it to blow white smoke and it is going to cause any damage to my '07 R1?

    Yes, and yes.
Depends on how much extra you've got in there, though. A few hundred mL shouldn't be an issue. An extra litre or more, the crank can be running in the oil, which causes dramas.

Might of just blown by the rings and caused minimal damage but you'd have to be lucky

So it'd be a good idea to drain the excess oil out?

Around 3 and a bit litres. The manual says it will take 3.1 litres with a oil filter change. So if I've gone over it would of only been a little bit over..

Did the smoke go away as you kept riding?

Yes. It doesn't do it all the time and when it does it does go away. It's only done it twice and only after a riding for a while and it will stop after a few minutes.

its nice to be able to see daylight in the sight glass, so you have a visual reference for how much over you are- dont bet your motor on gut feel. the amount of oil hungup in the motor after its been drained is an unknown.

personally i whack in ~80% of the capacity quickly by volume then spin the motor up for a minute to fill all the galleries filter ect then shutdown let it drain back to sump for 10 minutes before filling the remainder to the sight glass reference.

When I stopped I noticed that the oil level was too high in the window.
edit: also the oil/motor should be cool when you check oil level, hot oil will give a false high reading.
