Stock or aftermarket filter? You can't really clean most stock air filters and the only thing some guys will do is blow compressed air through them. Is it visibly dirty? If so, I would just replace it with a new one from your dealer.

I fucking hate the concept of blowing compressed air through a filter. Some douchebag at nissan did that with my standard throw away paper filter. He blew oil, dirt and shit through the filter allowing shit to get sucked into the intake and build around the throttle body, eventually causing a blockage. Fucking douchebag apprentice, saving nissan a couple of bucks. You could see the fucking lines made by the air nozzle pushing strips of muck through to the clean side of the filter.

If it's K and N style buy the cleaning kit, washing fluid, dry then oil it as it says to on the can. Throw away paper elements.
I doubt the OP was stupid enough to wash in dishwasher.

If someone means to clean a filter by blowing compressed air through it, it should be done from the inside out, not outside in - like you said, that's just pushing shit into the filter.

I have limited mechanical knowledge not severe fkng retardation!! lol
I found a service manual online and i used a solvent (mineral turps) to clean it in, let it dry then applied filter oil to it, put waterproof grease around the seal and put it back on.

Nice for stating you had a foam or fabric filter. you may have gotten better or more relevent advice should you have said so.

mind if you have done that to a paper one it should be interesting

I assumed she wasn't a fucking idiot and meant she had a filter that could be reused and was asking best way of doing it. Makes sense.
