what mods can I do and still get rego?

Hey guys, My name is michael, been flaoting around here for a while just reading different stuff thought Id make a post myself.

Just trying to find out what mods I can do to a bike and still get it regod.

Ive seen a lot of cafe projects and stuff with suspension and cosmetic mods. So I assume most of that stuff is staight forward for rego. But can I say replace a 500cc with a 650? can I put a 2000ish model engine in a 1970s frame?? Where can I find this stuff. I had a look through the Vehicle standards bulletin but doesnt seam to have anything in there for bike engien changes.

    any help appreciated

    cheers
    Michael.

    Mate, fancy seeing you here

You have to get permission from your wife first before you think of doing any type of mods!

So all this talk about building up a cafe style bike has got you thinking of doing one yourself? I hope you are able to build something, will be good to see finished product.
Can't ride for shit, but I fall really good!

if you build something from nothing, you need to get it engineered. if the engineer passes off on it, then it goes to the pits. if the pits pass it, then yea you're good to get rego.

that said, if the bike is full faired but there is a naked option, you can strip the fairings off and turn it naked and it will pass. same if vice versa. however if the frame has a 600 engine and you put a 1000 cc engine, or if the frame is made in 1970 and you put the 2010 R1 big bang engine in, you will need engineer to certify it, in which case there's a high chance you have yourself a deathtrap and it will not be safe hence never get rego for.

current model bike, anything you do is illegal. FE, muffler, LED tail lights, HID headlights on bikes that don't come with it from factory yadda yadda. but a lot of these things are trivial and you'd have to be doing something really bad to get the cops attention to pull you over for. e.g. stupidly loud 105 db exhaust at idle. the grey line is where some bikes come like that from factory but do not pass "ADR" and get yellowed the way it is stock standard.

To be entirely technically correct, any change that you make to your motorcycle, even a change to aftermarket levers, different chain pitch, you should get it checked by the DPI... however 9 times out of 10, it would be no problem.....

Most people who do that style of major customisation, do it to a registered and licensed bike, and keep it licensed through-out the process, assuming that people likely to give yellow stickers, won't know the bikes well enough to know what has or has not been changed....

How you decide to do it is entirely up to you.

Renton = Funniest man alive. fair call tho dude.

I scored my bros TX500 for nix. But thinking about turfing the original headache for somthing else, just wasnt sure how hard it would be to get rego. This will be a very long term project, and no not a cafe.

Thanks for the info guys. Has anyone here actually got something regod with a different engine in it? Not thinking R1 just something maybe like a ER6N or maybe TDM/TRX (basically keep the twin theme going), I would be looking at better brakes and tyres as well.

My advice is to modify your parts extensively, and leave the bike and frame unmodified. The cops tend to mostly pick on "hoon" style bikes or bikes that have very visually obvious modifications, so if you can change it and make it not too obvious you should get around fine. That being said, if you do get stickered, you're able to bolt the stock parts back on and have it "as it came".

Feel free to tackle it how you like, but adhering to the policies exactly is near on impossible, and the method I previously mentioned is much easier.
