    Wheels 1989 GSXR 750.

I want to paint or powder coat the wheels on my bike. At the moment they feel like plastic to the touch. I need to prep them, but am stumped to what they are painted/coated with. Anyone with any knowledge on what they did in the eighties? What is involved in preping wheels for a fresh coat? This is the first time I have done the whole project thing, so please excuse stupid questions. There will be a lot more coming.
I am well aware this topic have most likely been covered many times before, but you try entering "wheels" into the search engine....

Would 99% be paint , a decent paint stripper will get most of it off in one go .
Check the link below to my build/tidy up thread if you want to have a lookie at how i did mine

Sand blast and either powdercoat or anodize profesionally.
Wheels like a RZ500 are gold anodized by factory.

Glass blasting would be better i would think sand can be too abrasive and leave a rough "pitted" finish ?!?

If you get them powder coated, drop them off as is, they will blast and coat them. Leave the wheel bearings in and replace when done, also remove disc and put old bolts in holes. You may have to tape up where the cush drive goes, or let them know not to fill that area with powder coat and they can tape it up.

Ta. I will also look into the cost of replacement second hand wheels off a newer bike. I want to do this for as little money as possible. (famous last words)

my experience with 80s suzuki wheels is they were coated with a very plasticky kind of soft 2pac which does not sand like normal, but you can still prep and paint them....best way blast and powdercoat

If you go with powder coat, find someone that has lots of experience in bike wheels, otherwise you may end up with your inside rim bead areas covered in powder coat to, and its a headfuck to get it all off.

a mob in ozzy park, which i would have to look up now, did a set of wheels for the GPZ 550 i project'd $330 for both... for the colour i wanted... kwakka green... had to be 2pac'd, but looks fantastic and did all the prep work, including blasting and taping, had a good knowledge of bikes too. Took about a week (normal).
The frame on the white 09 R1's is NOT PINK that includes my bike...

What's the cost of annodising? Much of a step up from powder coat? Definately has the best finish. There is an 88 750 on ebay atm with anodised frame/wheels and it looks shit hot.
