Cool yamaha r1 2002/2003 dynobike airbox mod

new to the site im just about to get an power commander 111 and dyno tune for my 2002 r1 got a bmc filter and a micron slip on wondering has anybody done the airbox mod thats on dynobikes site ? its basically cutting the front of the airbox off where the intake duct is and cutting the plastic strip infront of the opening its all in pics and detailed description off how to do it they claim 5-8 hp gain when tuned im going to do it anyway after i get it tuned first whith the pipe and filter so i can see the diff on the dyno and seat off pants hopefully , just wondering if anybody has done it and if there is any downfall . . . .like loss of bott and mid range torque they have a dyno sheet it shows the hp no less than unmodified and starts to climb from around 4-5 grand looks very promising . and thanks arwon for heading me in the right direction

Hi there GBM, I moved this to where it may be seen. Welcome to PSB.

Can you give more details on the modification, if it's the AIS then most people block that off as a matter of course when modifying the tune.

It looks like it's kind of like a ram air intake that the later model R1's have

    Yamaha R1 Performance Upgrade

    Yamaha R1 Performance Upgrade
Extra 6-8 horsepower with simple airbox mod

Yamaha R1 02-03. 5-8hp with modified air box.
    Here's how it's done:

Remove the air box and you'll see a small plastic flap just behind the bottom of the steering head see Pic 1 std intake. Using a razor blade cut this flap off. This will leave you with an un-obstructed hole for clean air to enter. See Pic 2

Take the stock air box see Pic 3 and remove the lid and air filter see Pic 4, Remove the rubber snorkel. Between the 2 front bolt holes where you have just removed the snorkel using a hacksaw, cut this section out to roughly double it's original size see Pic 5
Once you have cleaned up all the rough edges assemble the air box with a BMC or KN air filter and install it back on the bike.

Fit a Dobeck TFi part no FI - 1020 following the instructions supplied, starting with the base setting, also supplied, go for a short ride and keep increasing the fuel until you can no longer feel any improvement or, alternately go done to you local dyno outlet and dial it in there, it shouldn't take more than an hour or so.
PS tuning instructions are also included with the Dobeck and is simple to understand and follow.

If you have already done a base run before on the dyno, after it's tuned you should see anywhere from 5-8 hp improvement.

Please note that you MUST remap the fuel injection for this modification, if you are in doubt do not attempt this job, take it to someone who is qualified.

When I bought my 03 R6 some dumb fuck had done this mod and added an aftermarket exhaust, put in a K&n filter. No piggy back ecu. So standard tune, it ran like shit. Replaced chopped up airbox added pcIII remapped accordingly, I'd say it's a worthless mod given the factory engineering that goes in to flow modelling. The claimed 5 or so hp gain could be purely from temperature conditions, fuel etc even if before and after comparisons are done on the same dyno.

03 r6 have ramair standard cutting a hole there would be pointless as there is already a big hole between the headlights for it to breath threw , but an 02/03 r1 have a very restricted opening to breath threw , a couple of guys on the usa r1 site have done some mods to the airbox and sounds like the same mod cutting front off the airbox there bikes ran lean then they retuned the motor so sound like it will work , and dynobike have been around for a long time and are very reputable . . . .and there willing to do it for you for a price off course , saying that id still like to hear from someone thats actually done it ive already looked at prices for a used airbox there not to expensive so im going to give it a go and def post what happens good or bad

Raising the front of the tank by 8-10 mm will give you 5hp by allowing more air to the inlets on top of the air box. If you change the air box you will change how the power comes in. When I ran a ram air box on my 01 R1 it lost bottom end and run rough down low. Not worth it really. You want power, buy a full race exhaust and tune that in.

i know about that mod of lifting the airbox up but its only for carbed r1,s 02/03 r1,s are injected and the air inlet is down the bottom at the front of the airbox , was interested in what type of ram air box you ran , was it a graves motor sport brand from the states , they have heaps of gear for r1,s but im shure the airbox they have is specially for 02/03 r1 that are injected , from what i researched carb bikes are very hard to tune for ram air ive seen sum stuff about it a couple of guys claim to get it to work whith great results but i think they are carb tuning wisards they said stuff like getting the carbs to pressurise the same as the box presurisses whith the ram air effect i think they said put tubes from airbox to carbs they copied what old carb kwaka zx9 had in there set up because there carbed and ramair from factory , something ive heard carb gurus do when turbo and using carbs , not using the tube thing but. . . getting the same pressure , its a pain in the ass thats why turbos are almost all injected now
