    ZZR 250 Exhaust

What are peoples experiences with their ZZR250's and the exhausts on them?

I bought my bike on the 22nd of December from southern river motorcycles. It already had different exhausts put on them. From what i can gather, they are a cheap eBay pair. They sound lovely at the low revs, at high revs there not not too bad either. I haven't had the pleasure of sitting behind it whilst traveling so i can't comment on the part.

I can see they are cheap, having a look at the left can where the can begins and joins the tapering pipe, it isn't joined properly at the bottom. I am considering undoing this side, popping the rivets out and re-installing the can.

Have any of yous replaced the exhausts on yours'. - Just saw these Muzzy's on ebay - anyone heard them on a ZZR250 or GPX250? eBay Motors: New MUZZYS Stainles Full Exhaust Kawasaki Ninja EX 250 (item 230179660654 end time Feb-05-08 08:17:34 PST)

    Thanks
    Adam

most ppl don't do a lot with the 250 side of things as they are just a stepping stone to big and fun stuff.

I understand that, its only the 250.

But a 1 year stepping stone is a long time. Might as well make it something you like.

Was just curious if people DID change their exhausts.

That looks like its been torn away from the rivet. Maybe your bike has fallen over before or the pipe been knocked.

It looks like its been shifted, as the header has been knocked and forced the rivet out.

Is it hard to re-rivet exhausts or a simple drill them out - rivet them back in? (possibly weld or exhaust "putty" ?

Easy fix mate. Just turn the can around a bit and re drill all the holes. You can see only half the rivet was grabbing the rest of the can so no surprise it came apart. These cans leak at the joins as they are crap so get something to seal them like exhaust putty or exhaust wrap before you re-rivet.

You've got me stumped. I've never had to do it. I'm sure you could put it back close and pop a bigger rivet in or drill around a bit further and pop another one in

Yeah, I now know what i'm going to be doing on Saturday.

Thanks for suggesting that Bart. I've just gotta turn the can around half and inch or so, drill in new wholes and then put in new rivets?

Would i need to even consider the packing in the can or... ?

    thanks

I wouldn't bother re packing it as the exhaust itself wouldn't be that old, plus you would need to rip the other apart to do at the same time. Just drill the new holes and she will be as good as gold.

Mark the holes then drill them first with a small drill bit. Maybe Try find a bit of wood ya can brace the inside of the can with so ya dont bend it out of shape. Now dill them out to the rivet size and chuck the new rivets in.

Cant get much easier than that

I was going to go exhaust wrap as the putty will be a bit messy. Go check out repco or an exhaust place.

One year does sound like a long time, but it will go by in a flash.

Besides, by about 9 months, you'll be probably wanting to get prepped to go for your Rs, and the 250 will be boring irrespective of what you do to it in the mean-time.

My 2c - do the front sprocket - you'll gain a fair bit of pick up down low, and basically lose NO top end (as the zzr is over-geared anyway from the factory and can't pull redline in 6th, as standard). This will cost maybe $15-20.

Leave the exhaust as it is, and put the money away for the next bike, or maybe a decent set of tyres. Good tyres will do more for your confidence and riding ability than any other mod, imho

I understand the whole "new bike" thing and wanting to play with it and modify it, but just be aware - you are seriously wasting your time and money doing so

I agree with thro on this one mate, the exhaust will give a very small if any improvement, and the front cog will make a big instant difference.

Do a search on 250's and you'll see the general sensus is save the cash for the big bike.

Either way have fun and be safe. oh put photos up when ur done lol

Drilling through stainless steel isn't as easy as i anticipated. LOL.

I got the rivets out, just gotta re-drill the new wholes and get some rivets.

It got a bit scratchy But did the best i could with a hand drill that has 2 speeds. I think a drill press would of helped greatly.

Decrease the size of the front sprocket, yeah?
    Or is it increase?

    Decrease.

Go 1 tooth smaller on the front, or alternatively 2 teeth bigger on the rear.

Front sprockets are cheaper than rear ones - they're smaller
