    Bees

Any bee-keepers out there who would like to keep a hive I found today in my garden.
They have taken up residence in an old pot belly stove.
Easy access to hive and on the ground.
If no takers, any recipes for a mass kill, have also rung a bee person who quoted $150 for removal.
    Cheers

Hmmmm, last bee issue I reported was met with an extermination response, and yet honey-making bees are at a near crisis level (according to market prices and media) ?

Yeah- our grape vines have got next to nothing this year and I read its due to the lack of bees this season.
I have had bees taken before by happy bee keepers- what has changed? Maybe this goes some way to explaining the crisis?

I think the issue is that the flowering plants aren't flowering and therefore there is no honey to be made by the bees.

Yeah, the drought of two hundred something days without rain mean that the Jarrah didn't produce any flowers, when it eventually did rain the trees put their energy into growth instead of flowers.

The jury is still out on the causes of Colony Collapse Disorder but the latest study I read seemed to think that overseas bees are just plain over-worked. We're in good shape in Australia so far and hopefully will continue as long as we can keep the varroa mite out.

They've worked out how to get the Dole. The Bees that is, not the keepers.

So they're not 'keepers' then huh?

I thought the lack of bees was due to the rain itself carrying through longer than usual into spring.

I would check around for a good bee keeper, thier rates vary so get in touch with a few and find out the service prices, dont let them sting you.
If at first you don't succeed, dont bother taking up sky diving.
This unit is portable when carried.
it wasn't a normal cookie, i figured that out 45 minutes into my exam.

Yea free, to $150 is the going rate.

Ring some other bee keepers. This is now the end of the season pretty much so you might find someone who wants a colony to get thru winter etc.

Try here also - WA doesnt appear to be setup too well for swarm collections, but its a start : Beekeepers' Associations

If I was still living in Perth I would have grabbed them myself for nuthin or beer from Greenwood

Mate, just an update. Haven't located my beekeeping uncle yet. He goes bush occasionally.
If the bees aren't causing any issues you can wait awhile or obviously, try another avenue if you need them gone in a hurry.

    Thanks Peter600,
I haven`t had any better offers, I thought maybe someone would like them delivered to their mother- in laws or have nasty neighbours that need a wake-up.
Anyway, there just buzzin and hangin around, not causing too many probs yet.
    Cheers

Hatchey, owner of Yibbida Yibbida fish n chip shop in port kennedy, try n get in contact with him (just call up the shop and ask for him) he is a bee keeper, gets the honey and sells it through his shop there, the only bee keeper i know of but if he doesnt want them he will have advice or maybe contacts of people who might. Failing that, bash up a hive and keep them yourself! I looked into it, if one sting wasnt going to kill the missus id keep a hive myself, alas she is allergic.

Hang on remembered another one, theres a bloke who sells HEAPS of fruit trees and plants and stuff, advertises on gumtree, in maidavale. He has hives out the back too, about ten of them. Another really nice bloke (must be a beekeeper thing) he wouldnt mind you asking questions, again he might want them or might remove them for ya. Its worth a phone call or two.
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.
