Do you need one desperately and right now, or can you wait and save a few more bucks?

Looked at a bunch of the budget laptops in that range for a friend a few weeks ago, deduced I wouldn't touch any of them with a very long stick. She started having issues almost immediately after buying one.

Save a tad more, buy something that isn't shit.

What do you need it for and what's important to you in a computer?

Make sure the laptop you purchase has an inbuilt spell checker across all of your programs, for starters.

    BUMP!!!!!!!

I am also in the market for a laptop. This will be something i can use for AVERAGE gaming (sum strategy games etc) and surfing and music. I've looked at the alienware comps and i just can't justify almost 2 grand, they have crazy performance which i dont need. Just a good all rounder that won't shit itself after 6 months.

Will be going into JB HI FI to see what they have on sale too

Give us this day our high-octane premium fuel
    And forgive us our lanesplitting
As we forgive the four wheel drives, the volvos and the taxis
And lead us not into gravel corners
But deliver us from hand-held radars

Um. Not so much. You could share a net connection through a laptop I guess, but you are a great deal better off just connecting the xbox straight to your dsl router.

sorry i don't have that much patience.

If your willing to stretch the budget to about 1200 you could get the Asus n53sv i7 sandybridge, 4gb ram (i upgraded mine to 6gb corsair), 500gb drive (changed mine to a vertex2 240gb ssd so boot times are awesome now ~10 sec in windows ready to go) and a nvidia GT540 gfx card.

Its a fairly decent gaming notebook for the price.

Have a look in Office Works as well if you're buying locally. I bought my sons laptop from there 5 months ago, they beat every other price- sometimes by hundreds.
They seem to have a lot in the lower price ranges- I paid $700 for my sons' HP and its a nice little set up. Hes running Skyrim on it no worries at full graphics.
Although its in the shop at the moment- pretty sure its dropped a fan

Have a look at a place on Aberdeen street northbridge I can't remember the name but all they deal with is laptops, it's opposite a park not too far from the tafe. Pretty reasonable.

i usually buy my stuff off austin, netplus, simline ..depending on where the prices are best. austin has email deals weekly/fortnightly.
they're local..with places like austin, they offer an online price + a walk-in price.. shop online, then pickup local. if anything goes wrong, you just bring it back into the store.
they're usually good with warranty stuff..service i do on my own, so it's never a big deal for me. i find that some of the places + staff cater for different customers (the experienced customer who knows what they want but at a good price, the customer who wants their hand held and walked through all options, so your mileage may vary).
