Cheap Network Cable needed. 10m and 13m

    Hi Guys,

I got into trouble using network switch (3 computers from 1 wall socket, apparently not allowed at my work, please don't ask why bcuz I am not IT educated).

so Now i have to connect up two computers to wall socket 10m, 13m away in next room.

so can you guys help me and where do I find it or someone who can make it? or cable just sitting somewhere collecting dust?
I know we have IT experts in PSB.

*I did ask DSE and Hardly normal $44 for 10m cable...* woot!

anyway if anyone can help, that would be super appreciated.

    thank you
    joey

If the PC's are allowed to connect to your work network shouldn't work be supplying the patch leads?

Actually.. I didn't even read the OP correctly.. if there's an IT issue, why aren't IT taking care of it, if it's a work thing?

You're breaking all sorts of rules bring introducing your own switch into the company network. Be careful, some firms consider that a sackable offence!

Considering that you're "non-IT" i'd suggest you get the "IT Guys" to approve whatever it is you're trying to achieve.

I work in IT and I couldn't give a fuck if you connected your own switch to my network. You wanna know how much an extra port costs when your working for the government?

Possible that they use L3 Managed switchgear, or separate VLANs or a heap of other reasons why IT don't want you hanging randome switches off the network.

If I were you I'd ask that they cable a couple of new wall ports and patch them in for you.

    Check with IT.

If you're going to run a 13 metre patch cable, its quite possible you'll introduce all sorts of problems with your connection due to cable length + loss.

max length for a cable run is 100m - if your port is say 85m from the patch panel, there's a 2 meter patch cable on the other end, and then you run another 13-15m, you'll be over length.

Clearly you're not a network admin who knows shit from clay then.

As browncow says, either get ports installed properly, or move your PC closer to the existing port. Excessively long patch cables are a bad idea, and not just because people trip over them and rip the ethernet port's pins out of your box...

    edit:
Oh, and if i found those ethernet over power pieces of shit on my business network, i'd beat the user to death with them.

    This.

In the schools where I manage the networks, users aren't allowed to touch any of the network gear. They do anyway, and then regret it when an entire wing drops off the network, and I have to go and find network loops.

    Bloody annoying.

    Because they don't have to.

    Yeah, no.

It is far from uncommon for companies to throw a lot of the ownus of hardware use and integration onto the employee. If you have problems, get a 3rd party to fix it, at your expense. And if you don't like it, don't apply for the job.

Anything to save companies a $ these days.

The fact that people may not have heard of such agreements or because it is not the way it is normally done does not make it "rubbish" or "utter bullshit" at all.

Maybe "far from uncommon" was an exaggeration but my reaction when I heard about this happening was the same as yours, but it happens.

I will say some companies don't want to pay for employee hardware and they don't want to pay staff to support them. It is a major cost.
And it is being written into contracts as the employee's responsibility.

My new boss mentioned that the company he just came from did it. I'll try and find out who it was.
