Anything that interrupts the flow of traffic pisses people off.

Freddie, I'm pretty sure the people here dont honestly wish to hit any cyclists, they are just venting because bikes hold up the rest of the traffic. People here rant about 50cc scooters for exactly the same reason.

Take a deep breath and dont get your lycra g-string in a twist.

What, you mean things like traffic lights, stop signs, buses, trucks, morons on their mobile phones? I take it you you get really upset with them and want to run them down also or are they a bit more of a challenge?

what a retarded reading of my post

I wasnt saying I get pissed off and want to run them down. I said, very simply, that anything which interrupts the regular flow of traffic annoys people. Thats why people get frustrated with cyclists, 50cc scooters, pedestrians crossing the road, buses pulling out of bays, etc etc etc. I didnt say all those people aren't allowed to be there, I was just saying that they cause frustration. Jeebus.

    +1

The only problem I have with cyclists is that unlike (most) motorcyclists who ride defensively - assuming every other road user is trying to kill them (whether deliberately or otherwise), cyclists ride as if everyone owes them a living.

There is a certain foolishness in riding without rear view mirrors and hoping that every vehicle coming up behind you will do the right thing and give you a wide berth when overtaking. That's a bit too much trust to put in people you don't know from a bar of soap.

Cyclists may well be entitled to riding on the road and yes, people who run down cyclists deserve to have the full weight of the law descend upon them - trouble is, as the saying goes: "He was right. Dead right. But now he is just as dead as if he were wrong."

Let me preface this by saying I drive a car, ride a motorbike and ride a pushbike for training, competition and in the interest of preserving knee cartilage.

I pick my routes carefully and always take the roads less travelled. Your greatest ally on the bike is a high degree of situational awareness. Good cyclists do know the route they commonly ride, the traffic patterns, the "hot" spots where lanes merge, cars come into lanes, cars turn onto and off of the route. They know the best hours to ride these routes for minimal interaction with traffic. They ride defensively by asserting their position in the road but not provoking motorists by doing so - a delicate balancing act. They are also courteous to drivers even while being assertive and do not react to drivers who attempt to provoke them (while driving away..) Drivers always win. Whether in a collision, a court case or an arguement that ends with the police intervening, drivers always win. Now does any of this sound familiar.....?

Additionally, empathy towards drivers is important. While this seems counterintuitive ("Let's get those spineless, simple-simon, weak redneck fucks") it is very important. Drivers through little fault of their own, are poorly equiped to deal with cyclists, they do not know how to behave on the road, they don't know what laws do or don't apply and they are often unnerved by us even being on the road. I hear "Fuck off on the bikepath with that thing where you belong - fag!" Every cyclist has experienced that. The driver did not receive any instruction in driver training that taught them appropriate interaction with cyclists "sharing the road" or "shared respect". Ring any bells....?

For all the abuse I've copped over the years I can honestly say I've never been at fault for being discourteous. Maybe it's just because your missus wants my digits. When I ride my heads always on a swivel. I watch vehicles at intersections, ride super defensively in urban areas, if cars look "suss" I slow down and look for an exit but there's only so much you can do when a driver is impaired, inattentive or texting. From my experience sometimes the safest place on the bike is in the peloton. I feel safer. I think drivers see groups better. I know someone is around if there's an accident.

    Exhale.

My problem with cyclists is around my parents place the roads are VERY twisty. I got caught behind a group of about 20 to 30 of them. I had to follow them for an entire hour. (My parents live 1/2 an hour out of town so I would leave 45 min to get to Bunbury on time). Now it's not soo bad if they are in small groups you can usually get around them after not too long. But riding in such large groups is wrong. So I'm not against cyclists Just Don't Be Stupit About It.

I wasn't aware the bikepaths are such a poor option. It was one of my pet hates to see someone poking along on the road and generally holding up traffic with a path right beside them.

Motorcycles do what we do without inconveniencing other road users (except the odd car that gets wound up that we can split, for whom there's always the whambulance). Cyclists, from the majority of my experience with them, do inconvenience other road users. It's a key difference.

The fact that they walk red lights and whatnot, I care nothing about (except for the fact that it will put them back in front of traffic that's just had to lane-shuffle to pass them).

    Aieee, thread res
