    Defensive Driving Courses

Good people of PSB it has been decided between myself and my parents that my brother needs to do a defensive driving course, my question for you is what would you recomend/have you been on?

I myself have been on the AHG defensive driving course and personally found it to be a waste of my time and an insult to my intelligence.

So if there any other options out there post them up and your views, i will be having a search on the interwebs today myself.

Hmmm, yes the DTEC course is kinda average, but.
The young man on same course (license for 6 weeks) found it pretty interesting.

They're meant for girls that do their makeup whilst driving, or people that have never stepped outside legal territory and given their car a "flick".

Things have changed that much hey?

Back when I was a youngling (late 80's) the national safety council did an advanced driving skid control course out in mount lawley, behind the uni on alexander/walcatt street. You drove either a kingswood or a mazda 323 (rear or front wheel drive) and they let you loose on a short twisty track covered in water/oil. Heaps of fun.
The aim of the course was to drive around the track without skidding, in other words driving smoothly so as not to provoke a break in traction.
Also, when you did skid the car, they also instructed you in controlling the car in a skid.
I found it very valuable instruction. Saved my butt a couple of times when I had to swerve around a dunce who pulled out in front of me in the wet. Fishtailed around the guy while the car behind locked it up and collected the old bugger right in the drivers door.

I can bet my left nut they don't do anything like that in their so called driver training nowadays because they prefer people to have accidents rather than knowing how to actually drive.

    Bingo!
Grant Dorrington is on the record as being against advanced driver training, because it will only encourage people to be hoons, and to push their limits.

Most "defensive" driving courses are book related, and not to be confused with Advanced driver training or anything connected with teaching people how to actually control a vehicle. They are meant to teach awareness of the hazards and dangers on the road - the best way of doing that would be to stick everyone on a postie bike and drop them in the city for a week!
