    Driving from Perth to Sydney.

Moving to Sydney and planning to drive there. Preliminary itinerary is as follows:

    Day 1:
Perth - Norseman via Great eastern
Norseman - Eucla via Eyre Hwy

    Day 2:
    Eucla - Ceduna
Ceduna - Port Augusta via Eyre
    Port Augusta - Broken Hill

    Day 3:
Broken Hill - Dubbo via Barrier Hwy/Mitchell Hwy
Dubbo - Sydney via Orange, Katoomba then the M4

Any valuable input from those who have done the trip? Places to check out, cool places to photograph.. that sorta thing.

Will be driving a '04 Toyota Corolla hatch with a mate with around 100-150kilos worth of stuff packed in the car. Just done a major service on the car too.

Re: Driving from Perth to Sydney.

Avoid driving between dusk an dawn, a reasonable size roo would write a car off.

Dare I say it might pay to make it 4 days.........

Places to see? Well the bight is good, broken hill area is were mad max was filmed etc (silverton is the actual town I think but about 30ks from broken hill)

i've done it a few times but each time was non stop rotating drivers and we were driving trucks or buses.

didnt really get to see much of it as the first time we were driving horses and the second time was driving uni students over for a conference, so time schedules were pretty tight.

as much as people talk about all the roos and camels, we saw very few really. still wouldnt want to risk it in a car at the wrong times though. 1 lapse in concentration and they get ya.

dude driving those distances in a day i dont think you would have much time to check anything out.

Having done Orange to Adelaide in a day more times than I want to remember it takes it out of you.

But if you have the inclination go for a lap around Mt Panorama!!!

The 3 sisters in the blue moutains is nice and the old cable car there (if it is still running) in Katoomba.

Edit: What is the reasoning in going through Dubbo also? Why not West Wylong - Cowra - Bathurst?
You would miss Orange which is a very nice little town but i am sure you would survive that and save yourself a couple of Kms. Its not like you are going to get a chance to have a look at Western Plains Zoo just outside Dubbo.

Men have motorcycles while women have mensutral cycles, you can't talk to either while they are on it. The women's also has a sound, it goes nag-na-nag-nag-nag, biiiiiitch-bitch-biiiiiiiitch!

I am planning a trip to Gold Coast very shortly, and I have almost the same route planned, cept different fork after Broken Hill obviously

Doesn't sound like you want to see anything on the way, so I reckon the distances are right, figure you want an early start the first day though. I am planning a 2am start time.

I will be marking everything I want to see on the way there, as I fly past, and then planning a longer return journey home.

    Good luck with your trip

Thats a pretty ambitious timetable...I did it once in 48 hours and was rooted for the next two days...

I recommend (imho) leave Perth about 11pm/midnight and you can make Eucla by dinner time. Have breakky in Coolgardie or Norseman.

Then Eucla to Port Augusta is a fair days drive.

Then Port Augusta and take the Barrier hwy to Cobar or Dubbo. Then to Sydney the next day. Or go via the Hay plains ie Mildura, Wagga wagga etc.

Take a jerry of fuel, 10 litres of water, a radiator repair kit in a can, at least one serviceable spare tyre and tools.

Stopping along the bight just after the border is a must. Everywhere else is pretty boring. You should have a tailwind most of the way to SA so fuel economy should be ok. Heading into the westerly/sou'westerly can affect fuel economy quite a bit.

Food on the way across is mostly rubbish. If you have room, take an esky of drinks/water, some snacks, any fruit will have to be eaten by Eucla. You will save yourself some bucks there.

Have a safe trip. Watch out for the cops either side of the border and once you get past Port Augusta.

Been to Sydney by Greyhound Bus. In 4 days (with day/night drivers) we did Perth-Adelaide-Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney, with very few stops.

I've also driven to Adelaide in the same amount of time, with alot of stops and sightseeing.

I'd recomend stretching your trip out by another day or two, as you'll feel more refreshed after more stops and being distracted by looking at pretty things.

The food is pretty shit (and ridiculously priced) between Norseman and Ceduna, and make sure you stock up on CD's and MP3s or you'll be stuck with JJJ or ABC radio for 90% of your journey.

I agree with the dusk/dawn and the roos. Also keep an eye out for wedge-tail eagles on the nullabor.

Best of luck with your trip and take loads of pics!

most of what is said here is good... except when I did it 3 months ago in a holden commo with a mate who lost his license (i drove the whole way cos he wanted to go home to syd).

    I went Perth - Norseman
Norseman - Ceduna (all your fruit and livestock ahs to be eaten and or declared here.....not Eucla...Eucla is for East west crossing, ceduna for west east crossing.

From Ceduna go nas your comfortable, but 13 - 14 hours a day drive is easy to do.

On another trip from perth to melb I did the saem, but from ceduna went directly into melbourne.

Hit up MattyA. he recently did the trip down to my neck of the woods. the route which matt took to get here could easily be adjusted to go to sydney however
Cops call it reckless riding. I call it 'skillz'

Thank you for all the valuable input. I'll have a chat with my mate and see what he reckons. Both of us will be alternating the driving hence the reason why we thought 3 days was not too taxing physically and mentally. Boring no doubt but its not crossing over into overly fatiguing territory.

Waikika - No particular reason for taking Dubbo, we might re-evaluate that round given the advice.

About 100 ks west of Port Augusta there is a town called Iron Knob.

Its important to get a photo in front of the big "welcome to Iron Knob" sign.
