Application form consists of who you are and why you want to be a firefighter, basically. I am told a senior first aid certificate and HR license are also bonuses to have.
Next is aptitude testing - maths and mechanical reasoning, decision making under pressure.
Physical test - beep test to 9.6
Dummy lift (approx 30kg) around a marker and back, distance around ten metres
Confined spaces test - breathing Apparatus on back, crawl through a 1 x 1m tunnel, with people making noise in the background, and the instructor asking you questions - remember a sequence of numbers, what direction are you facing...
Height anxiety - 30m (I think) up a ladder, step across a 1m gap onto a platform.
Ttool lift - a 10-15kg tool, held at shoulder, waist, and knee height for 30sec per position.
Hose drag - drag a fully charged 60mm hose for 20m, either in 1 x 20m pull or 2 x 10m bites. The smart ones do the 2 x 10m. Wet concrete floor, outside.
Interview stage - front a panel of 4 delegates - FESA employees (station and office staff), and some out-of-towners (other people bought in to make sure the process is fair). Answer 20 min or so of questions, go home, wait 3 - 6 weeks, get answer.
Best of luck to you.
