Pfft, Area 51 garbage, we all know that Area 52 is the shit yo
Seriously though the likeliehood that aliens exist are pretty high, considering that the number of planets in our solar system, extrapolate out that there is one planet in each solar system that has the potential for liquid water and that can sustain life, as we know it anyway, and you get a really big fucking number.
Take into account that we a have been transmitting radio signals for a bit over a hundred years, for any alien life to be here would have had to have received and understood our signals, developed or have already developed FTL travel or be able to travel at lightspeed at least to get here and arrive in a living condition.
I reckon it is more likely to be alien space probes, they are assessing us for either contact or enslavement

Had a read of the above link, it is mentioned that Drake never intended it for to be science, since each number used in the equation is an estimation only, the formula was intended to spark debate about the subject.
I happen to think that life has to exist on other planets in the universe, in my book it is pretty arrogant of us meatbags to think we are the only intelligent life in it, quote below from here: specifically the second last paragraph
EDIT :
The Drake equation Main article: Drake equation
In 1961, University of California, Santa Cruz astronomer and astrophysicist Dr. Frank Drake devised the Drake equation. This controversial equation multiplied estimates of the following terms together:
One of the main reasons to show doubt to the equation is that the involved parameters are assumed to be statistically independent.[citation needed]
- The rate of formation of suitable stars.
- The fraction of those stars which are orbited by planets.
- The number of Earth-like worlds per planetary system.
- The fraction of planets where intelligent life develops.
- The fraction of possible communicative planets.
- The "lifetime" of possible communicative civilizations.
Drake used the equation to estimate that there are approximately 10,000 planets in the Milky Way galaxy containing intelligent life with the possible capability of communicating with Earth.[70]
Based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, there are at least 125 billion galaxies in the observable Universe. It is estimated that at least ten percent of all sun-like stars have a system of planets,[71] i.e. there are 6.25×1018 stars with planets orbiting them in the observable Universe. Even if we assume that only one out of a billion of these stars have planets supporting life, there would be some 6.25×109 (billion) life-supporting planetary systems in the observable Universe.
The apparent contradiction between high estimates of the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations and the lack of evidence for, or contact with, such civilizations is known as the Fermi paradox.
Just thought of something to add (and found a pretty cool picture), it only has to be life, does not necessarily mean a civilization, there maybe other forms of life, as we are based on carbon, apparently the chances that life can be based on other elements has to be there too.
The first contact with another civilization is more likely to be through technology, (probes like Voyager - if intercepted, which are still operating and sending data - Pioneer 10 & 11 are dead, no juice left) than directly, what if they are less advanced than us (ie space traveless) but can detect our transmissions and have sent a response that has not yet arrived.
And now for the cool picture :
See the brown streak in the right?
See the little dot in it?
That's us, taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 from 6m kilometres away, the image is called "the pale bue dot"
alien 1: did they get our message?
alien 2: yes..... and they're dancing to it and calling it dubstep.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?
when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.
foofighters are from the 40s 50s

An "Earth type" world, or other life supporting ecosystem relies on many things. Distance from the star (which is a very specific sweet-spot), a moon or two to intercept larger meteoroid strikes (and some gas-giants to suck in or divert the larger bodies). In particular an active ferrous core that creates the magnetic field which protects us from most of the harder radiation. So the Drake equation has to be modified to take account of these conditions - or we just accept that alien life could be a damn site tougher than we, and have no interest in shaking our soft little hands.
I think Desmo might be thinking about the last line of this little ditty...
I can see it's boundaries on my TV when it's not properly tuned in, ergo, it is finite.
You do seem to be the master of the "Sweeping statement, then backpedal" post.
Somewhere between 26 billion and 150 billion light years across give or take.
I know a short cut though.
