Foxtel Plug = TV antenna ???

Just moved into a new place and the only plug in the wall is an antenna plug for the foxtel. It has a threaded plug instead of the normal tv antenna socket. Ive had a look on the roof and it has both a dish and antenna.

Do I just need to buy a cord with the threaded attachment on the end or will I have to re-wire the old antenna back in.

    Cheers

You cant use the foxtel outlet with the F-Connector for FTA unless its actually connected to the antenna. You'll have to trace the cable from the antenna to see where it actually goes.

Doubt it will work. Foxtel antenna is a directional sat dish, FTA uses an omnidirectional antenna...

Possibly, unless theres another point somewhere else in the house. Quite often when foxtel install their cabling, they remove any existing FTA point close to where you want your foxbox and use that for their own purposes (slack buggers). If you dont intend on getting foxtel connected, theres no harm in simply rewiring that socket as your FTA. Foxtel and FTA antenna's both use the same cable so theres no issues there.

I think what Aphex is getting at is making sure the f type plug on the wall may only run to the satellite and not the antenna. In which case no good for free to air.

Trace the cable from the wall outlet and see where it goes to.

Although (others can clarify if I'm wrong) my understanding is you can run a cable from your antenna and tap into the line from the dish with a diplexor to merge the signal into the one cable down to the wall outlet.

No reason you can't use the existing f type outlet for FTA though. Get an adapter for your current lead (couple of dollars), or get another lead.

Ill get up in the roof this weekend and have a look then. Was hoping that when they install foxtel it was the norm to splice the two together. If its not joined ill go to J-car and buy the cord to suit plus look into this diplexor your talking about. I presume thats a plug to easily tap into another plug hey timmy??

Tis basically like a Y peice with a few fancy bits inside Bart. However if you do intend to get foxtel, chances are they'll provide you with a shiney new LNB on your dish which requires more than one cable. If this is the case, dont worry about the diplexer. Just trace the cables and can connect the antenna to your socket.

Na just want normal free to air tv. Best bet is to just find the old antenna wires then and change the plug in the wall back to normal right?

Was just hoping the foxtel install still had the normal antenna connected but im thinking not.

Yep, that's your best bet. If you cant find the cable though, and the cable to your dish is long enough, just cut that and re run it to your antenna.

is the connection on an internal wall? ie: a wall which doesnt have the 'outside' on the other side and hence wouldnt have a cavity?

if its an internal wall, and it only has a foxtel branded wall plate on it, you could probably safely asume it is already diaplexed. if this is the case, just grab a lead with an f type connection on one end (the threaded type) or get an adapter for the lead you already have and plug it in and it will work. you only need a second diaplexer to 'split' the signals if youre getting foxtel (and then its their problem anyway)

if that doesnt work then the foxtel tech was probably a lazy bitch and cut the cable

are you coming to the qzar thing tonight/tomorrow? if you are let me know and ill grab a lead and bring it along for you to try

The point is on a wall which borders the outside. We are popping our heads in to say hi at Q-Zar this evening but probably not staying as we're both pretty run-down at the moment.
