This takes the cake, and from a Northland (NZ) youth Judge who gave this speech to a a lazy thieving little excuse maker,

."Always we hear the cry from teenagers 'What can we do, where can we go?'...... My answer is, "Go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build a raft, get a job......, visit the sick, study your lessons, and after you've finished, read a book. Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun. The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in poverty or sick and lonely again." In other words, grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone. Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It's too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and that somebody..... is you'

That sounds a hell of a lot like one of those shitty chain email things that always involve something that happened in another country at an unspecified time and with no supporting link to the actual event in question.

If we're going to put words in the mouths of others, can we at least choose forum users so that they have some chance of defending themselves? Because if the judge really said that, then I get the feeling s/he would disagree with and be disappointed by Ausfitt's chosen description of the youth to whom the judge they made their impassioned and optomistic plea. Quite a lot of good will in it, partly undone by your sweeping judgement of the subject (who may live in entirely different circumstances than Ausfitt).

Authority figures have asked this sort of thing of adolescents every single decade since written records began. This doesn't tell us anything unique about any generation, it just suggests that some will always make it through life's stages easier than others.

Today we blame the kids. Tomorrow we might give them a break, as we shift the blame to their parents. Another centuries-old tradition.

Well, here it's at least 28 years old, -
The Nevada Daily Mail - Google News Archive Search

    And here it's 44 years old, -
    Pointer's

So while I agree with much of is contained in the message, I think a little rebellion is a good thing, it avoids a lockstep mentality. And I'm not sure about the idea that the world owes you nothing- if you have the obligation to contribute, then you have the right to a withdrawal on occasion as well. The withdrawal doesn't need to be destructive or selfish though; think free healthcare and education, aged care etc.

The happiest people don't HAVE the best of everything, they MAKE the best of everything.

I have no issues with particular age groups...

... seems to me the only thing that annoys me is the idiots, and they are evenly spread across all age groups...

    ‘90% useless’ and ‘10% distorted'
