    Gerry Harvey does a backflip

Seriously, this guy is losing it. First he starts petitioning to lower the GST threshold for imported goods.

Now he's opening an online store importing games from Europe to get around the taxes himself!

It's a great example of "If you can't beat them, join them" But that doesn't change the fact that he's an insufferable prat.

He's already established stores overseas benefiting from different taxation regimes...

Smart businessman, but really really stupid for making such a false show about the online purchasing we're doing.

His whole "hey, you should pay more from me because....umm...I want more money" went really well *cough*.

Then you got truly smart people like Kogan doing their own grey-importing/drop-shopping of cameras and other small electronics from Hong Kong.

He's just trying to play catch up.

Gerry is just rubbing the words 'GST free' into the governments face to try to achieve his goal. Wait for the marketing campaign.

    Tis nice to see a retailer say;
Retailers and suppliers have been keeping the prices far too high
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

Harvey Norman is the only shop I have ever gone into and seen things for 10% above the recommended retail.

    Gerry Harvey is a dinosaur.

Maybe he will adapt in time to the online revolution, maybe he won't.

Don't particularly care. He can adapt or die.

GST has nothing to do with why goods are so expensive here, the big issue is that we simply don't have the population density to support local shopfronts with the current land value/wage levels/supply chain inefficiency/desired profit margins we have.

I think it will be unfortunate that you can't see what you buy before you buy it, but that has generally not been the case in aussie retail for quite a few things now - the "on the shelf" availability of "stuff" if you want something outside of the norm is pretty abysmal.

    ps:

Harvey is a hypocrite. He was the first of the big retailers to abandon Australian manufacturers for Chinese imports. He even bragged about it and said that everyone would be following his lead in a feature in the West magazine about 10 years ago.

Gerry Harvey's only concern is Gerry Harvey and how he can best make money.

That and most people would rather stick with ozgameshop then give this guy their money, his online store has only just launched but there are a fair few games there that are more expensive, and OGS does free shipping!

The guy pushes to just up taxes on online sales, then he says that we are "un-australian" for not buying from him, how he thought that would go well for him I'll never know.

You forgot to add "whiney voiced whinger"

Apart from that, not much left to discuss.

Heh heh heh; 'It's not Christmas unless Gerry Harvey's whingeing' | Latest Business & Australian Stock market News | Perth Now

Mr Swan defended the GST threshold on goods bought offshore, saying a Productivity Commission report into the issue found it wasn't the cause of retailers' woes.

"I can't remember a Christmas where Gerry Harvey wasn't whingeing," he told ABC Radio today.
