Ok, so I've just had to change my gmail account of 10 years because I am constantly receiving email that is not supposed to be addressed to me, and I have
privacy concerns about my email being received by someone else.
Let me explain... Receiving mail inadvertently for a different gmail account name - period character ignored in uname? - Gmail Help
"Dots in account names are not significant. That is, first.last@ is the same e-mail address as firstlast@. Receiving a message with an address with a different configuration of dots does not mean there are two accounts with the same name." Google
Google states that periods are not significant in the email address. That is that A.B, a.b, ab, and AB are all the same email addresses. That sounds ok if you originally set up AB right, then someone can send email to A.B and you will get it.
The problem starts when gmail allows new users to setup email accounts with periods in them, when they are actually aliases for other accounts. Here is my scenario,
Some time ago User X sets up AB@gmail.com
I'm user Y, I then setup up A.B@gmail.com (my first name is also A, and my surname is also B, obviously AB@gmail.com is taken).. No problems says google. But when users start sending emails to AB@gmail.com then I am also getting them at A.B
I have scans of AB@gmail.com passport, other travel details, details where he works etc. I have contacted him and let him know about this, I notice now that on other emails I get his has a new cc' added, so I guess he set up a new account also.
After years of this I've given up and setup a new email address. I thought google was a bit smarter than this.
