how long do jet skis last?

    hello,

i was about to buy a boat until i seen this youtube video of a guy in south africa catching a marlin from a jet ski.

I would prefer a ski to a boat as i dont have much space left to park on.

Anyone know how long jet skis last?

I've heard everything between 200 and 2000 hours

doesnt seem like much for the price of the.

How costly is an engine rebuild/replace?

I plan to use it most weekends of the year for fishing and diving only. No towing or stunting

i want the yamaha fx ho

so yeah, is it realistic to expect to get 5 years of fishing out of it before binning?? Or am i better off with a boat?

    Cheers

All depends on maintenance and damage, just the same as an outboard.

A Jetski is not a dive boat, or a Marlin boat. check the marine safety laws.

And there are more different boats as there are different motorcycles.. they cannot be compared.

EDIT- Get your rec Skippers ticket first.

i know they are not traditionally dive boats and marlin boats, but i caught massive snapper from a cheap plastic kayak.

Nothing stopping me from fishing the shipping channel or local reefs from a big 3 seater ski that can get to and from hunting grounds faster than most dinghys

the only law i am aware of is that boats less than 3.75m cant go more than 5nm off shore

i have a mariner outboard from 1972 that still works

would a 4 stroke high hp engine, even if expertly maintained be as reliable as an outboard?

Yes a well maintained Honda would last for ages with dealer servicing and some grey matter.. but for the same 25k you could get a half decent 5m boat designed for your useage.

    thanks mate

i realize that and wish i had the space for a decent boat

but the novelty of converting a ski into a full fledged fishing rig has won me over

less cleaning, less hassle at the ramp, less space, more fun, more challenging and its a new sport

they just seem more costly for less

You will also require an anchor and line, flare kit and fire extinguisher. It will also be incredibly uncomfortable to fish from.

Spend half the cash on a proper boat and use the other half to keep it stored somewhere.

Jet skis are not well liked in Bunbury, from memory Turkey point is the only approved ramp and there's a lot of rocks to deal with, I didn't even like launching ally dinghys from there in good weather, the boaties and local residents will be very quick to report you if you're not meant to be somewhere, a mate had a 215hp seadoo and sold it when the skippers tickets came in because it wasn't worth the hassles, he ended up with a 6hp motor on I think a 10 foot ally, whatever was small enough to avoid needing a recreational skippers ticket which you will also need for a jet ski if you don't have it already.

    cheers guys

yeah, already have my skippers ticket

piss easy to get and cheap, wouldnt let that put me off

a lot easier to get than what i went through to get my busa licence

have all the safety gear from my old boat

might go to the cut and clear some rocks away from the ramp

that sux though, wouldnt like leaving my car there in that dodgy secluded car park

might have to take it down to busso
