Some scooters use direct drive, but it's been a while since I've seen or heard about a car making use of four direct drive engines...

    170kw!!!!

He did over 40,000 klms in it

Changed my mind about electric transport

I've done my own conversion. A Charade. Runs but not road legal yet. Gets up to 100km/h a bit quicker than with the original engine. Only prob is I have 550kg or batteries and think I will have a bit of a problem getting it over the pits as a result.

What does it cost to convert a car anyway?
Is it worth it or is it best left to the Greenies at this stage?

There's a few DIY electrics getting about that are registered. There's a bloke that's done and old mustang, old merc and a HZ or HJ ute. Provided your brakes & suspension are up to it, and you have a qualified engineer certify it, I don't see why it wouldn't pass.

Depends on what you want and what you know. Cost me about 10k but since then I found I could have shaved quite a bit off that. Also I went way overboard on the batteries. Then again you could also spend about 15k on lithium batteries and get range up near that of a normal car.

With an EV you build it to your normal needs. I built mine to have a range of 100km per day (charge) with acceleration better than the old car (not hard with a Charade).
I could have saved a lot if I knew then what I did now , eg I spent 2k on a charger just to find out I could have used 10 separate cheap charges and got better battery life as well.

Check out this vid of an electric drag bike. Watch to the end.....

Not really. Your only prob would be weight. You would either need a lot of heavy lead acid batteries or a lot of expensive LiPo's or similar. The technology is already there just got to get the costs down a bit.

Yep been for a ride in the Mustang, that car really performs well although a mustang that quiet just seems wrong. He has a lot lighter setup than mine using LiPo or ion batteries.
I have already replaced the springs on the back but the car looks like it has really been lowered. If I fix the springs and maybe change the back drums for disks I might get away with it.

That is a big myth propagated by the oil giants.

Ok little harsh but it is a lot of BS. The average modern car is VERY quite engine noise wise. The road noise of a family car is actually higher than the engine noise and an electric car sounds exactly the same. The only real time you have to worry about an electric car being too quite is when you are backing up and that is easily fixed with a simple beeper.

    That car is downright awesome.

I was looking into the Chevrolet Volt again recently. Rather interesting hybrid concept there.
