international year of the potato
this year we celebrate the international year of the potato{iyp}
which was officially launched at united nations headquarters at the end of 2007.
The purpose of the IYP is to raise global awareness about the importance of the humble spud. During the next two decades as the world's population is expected to increase by more than 100 million people a year, more than 95 percent of that increase will occur in developing countries, where pressure on land and water is already intense. This will create an ever increasing challenge to ensure food security for the present and future generations, while protecting the natural resource base on which we all depend.
The potato is expected to take an important lead in an effort to meet this challenge.

They are expecting you to help feed 100 million people?
How about starting with feeding us here at PSB

Did you know:
1. More than a billion people in 125 countries eat potatoes, making it the third most important food crop in the world and, at a time when food prices are continuing to rise, some say we should start paying a bit more attention to the humble spud.
2. A hepatitis vaccine grown in genetically engineered potatoes seems to protect most people who eat them, US researchers report
3. The UN says the potato "produces more nutritious food more quickly, on less land, and in harsher climates than any other major crop", and potato production is expanding dramatically in the developing world as the tuber's nutritional value and ability to withstand climate change are increasingly understood.
4. 'Deb' is the most widely recognised brand of instant mashed potato, so maybe you should all start showing me some more respect.
Now, I'm off to try and draw Spuddy into this dialogue.

Wash Potato, Peel Potato (slowly and with a sharp knife, so youdo not waist the juicy bits)
wash Potato, again, Cut Potato up in longditude square strips, dry potato of weeping excess fluids ((BOAGG?)).
Tip Potato in hot frying oil, cool Potato down and Fry Potato once more till he is golden brown!!
put Potato in a news paper pointy bag sprinkle plenny of chooksalt on him, splatter a generous dollup of Mayonaise (full egg yok variety)) and some Satay sauce.
Open a BOAGG,and......

Yup, you got me, Princess
And Deb is the best camp food I've ever had - goes well with canned vegies and sausages, but even better - you catch fish, and roll them in the dry potato flakes and fry them - instant camp batter = win!

Yes, but you need to put effort in to make real mashed tato's - deb is my kind of meal - "Just add water"
McSpud and Spud are probably spreading the word about year of the potato...
