i got jury duty last year and thought i would be there for a few days.

ended up on a 5 week murder trial!!!! it was interesting to see how the system works... and even though we found the guy as guilty as sin, it was not nice to stand in court and say "guilty" knowing you just put a guy away for a minimum of 20 years in strict security!

If you look intelligent then the defence lawyer will bounce you. If you've got better things to be doing then read the paper while your waiting to go in but if not and your bored then show up looking impressionable and you'll get selected.
This is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs (your personal circumstances). Before using this advice to decide whether to purchase a product you should consider how appropriate it is in regard to your personal circumstances.

It sort of depends - Most of the time you get something between 2-5 days but ocasionally something juicy that'll last longer. You get fully reimbursed either from your employer or the govt so if you'd like a change of scenery it's not a bad deal.
The waiting around etc is mostly on the first day (provided you get selected and don't have to go back into the pool) so it's not that bad.
I got selected for a really pissweek 'domestic violence' case which was a complete waste of time. The person who allegedly got assaulted wasn't really interested in any way (the state pressed the charges) and the whole thing was completely blown out of proportion (i.e he held the door shut while she was in the bedroom...deprevation of liberty blah blah). It gave me an insight of how much money and resources we're wasting on pointless cases if you take into account the court fees, the judge, the lwayers, 3 court clerks, 2 security guards (who were mostly asleep) and 12 jurors (who were desperately trying to stay awake). And yeah the judge and the lawyers will treat the jury as morons explaining the same thing 100times. I felt like getting up and saying YEAH WE F*** get it just move on.
All in all. unless you really love your job, do it as it gets you out of work.

If you dont want to do it, Just walk in with your helmet and bike jacket, either the prosecuter or the defence will object to you being chosen and you can go home!!
especialy if its a case involving the traffic act.

Have seen this happen a few times now.. typical stereotyping.

Ive always thought it would be interesting to follow the process out of curiosity.

If you're picked and dont want to be on the jury, just wink at one of the lawyers as you're walking up to the jurers seats.

I was a jury member for an aggrevated assault + theft case that went on for 4 days. It was pretty interesting.
Have you won the game recently?? Post here

I spent 3 days, about 4 hours each day, sitting in a big room bored as hell. Best we got was coffee and biscuits
Didnt get picked for any trials and im a casual employee so no reimbursement

So yeh jury duty sucked for me

Although it would be much better if you got picked for a case and get paid fully for being there

Some people I talked to found it was fun and recommended the experiance. When I got called up, I went to the doc and got a note to say Im not fit to sit on a jury. The upside to hearing loss

Yep - works like a charm

Did it about 2 years ago, got my number called up each time, one of the lawers in each case bounced me after looking at my riding gear. One of them (a minor drug dealing case) I barely got to stand up before he challenged.

Pretty boring day all in all - oh and the re-inbursement is shithouse.

As far as I could gather if you decide to turn up it's better to get selected asap otherwise you'll be thrown back in the pool and asked to come back and have to go through the same bshit again. It's better to get picked so you'll know exactly how long it's going to take (give or take) and get on with it. Some moron in my pool turned up in a singlet and bare feet. Needless to say he was asked to leave but had to come back the next day with clothes on. There's the justice system for ya. You're future is being decided by retards a paper bag short of a hobo!!

If you don't get selected, they'll normally drag you to one or two more trials, and then 'release you' from jury duty. (that is, until you're randomly selected again)

Probably not the particular case you'd want to get sexually aroused in though, chief.

Send them a letter telling them that, asking to be excused. Worked for me, and I forget to send the letter until after I was supposed to be there.
