    Learning to like fish?

Alright, I'm a godless heathen who can't stand fish unless it's something really light on natural flavour that's been bombed with delicious spices/seasonings. Unfortunately, I should probably be getting some in my diet.

Anyone have recommendations on types of fish and recipes for someone looking to ease themselves into getting used to that arse-nasty fishy taste?

Basa fillets are lightly flavored and cheap.

I have a Fish bake recipe I came up with that goes down well with non-fish eaters if you are interested.

Well if you don't like the typical "fishy" taste, you should try some local pink snapper or dhu fish.
You cant go wrong with that. snapper's a personal favourite of mine.

+1 for the basa fillets. gettem at both coles and woolies... but my local coles seem to have better fillets. Ive got a light crumb seasoning i roll it in, then fry on low/medium heat. If you over cook it its just rubber. Its my favourite fish to cook, not cos its cheap, but its easy and tastes good. Im not a salmon or tuna eater. Likewise im not a fan of Baramundi you buy down here. Its farmed crap. natrual caught Bara... om nom nom..

I'm not that big on fish, but it's a great excuse to eat tartare sauce.

Pick up some salted salmon from you local asian grocerer. It has texture just like steak and doesn't have the regular fishy smell.

Bream is a good one to try, not that strong on flavour or smell.

I cook fish a bit, don't go overboard with the herbs and spices. Keeo it simple, oregano, taragon and dill

Simple coating of some plain flour, salt and pepper (or lemon pepper), mix into a bowl and coat the fish, a little olive oil and pan fry or on flat plate of the barbie, when you turn the fish a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime
Somehow it's reassuring knowing that I'm not the only one pretending to be normal.

If you cover fish with milk & leave while you season plain flour with salt, pepper & a shake of pwdered dill, it will lessen the "fishy taste"

Remove fish from milk, roll in flour, shake off excess. Pan fry in a mix of oil & butter. Which is the best??? only you can decide that .

For fish that are tasty without being fishy try bluebone (black spot tuskfish), Goldband snapper (actually a member of the jobfish family, the rosy jobfish and green jobfish are pretty tasty too.
Robinson's sea bream (Robbo), ranks highly too.
Don't try and eat oily fish like Mackerel, they taste fishy and horrible.

Also +1 on Basa. I've got some defrosting right now in fact. It's cheap, and doesn't have much, if any, fish taste, which is something I also struggle with at times.

We also buy and eat Bassa once a week. It's light on fishy flavour and very firm flesh. I have used it in curry as well. But I roll it in seasoned stuffing mix, Coles brand.
But buy your Bassa from an Asian store much cheaper than Coles, $4.99/ kg

Soak the fish in milk in the fridge overnight. The milk absorbs the 'fishy' aromas and flavours (you can do this with other stuff too to make awesome flavoured milkshakes). When its done, pat it dry with paper towel and cook with butter. Discard the milk.

Salmon Steaks. Cook them with garlic pepper and a pinch of salt ala normal steak.

Cheers, time to drop by the shops and give it another crack I think.

Tuna isn't too bad in casserole, I guess, but can't stand the taste on its own.

I'll have to try the milk thing and some of the species y'all suggested. I appreciate the help.

Whiting usually is pretty sweet tasting. Just garlic butter perhaps?

Try also putting in some cajun seasoning into your breadcrumbs b4 u pan fry it.

Could spice up your mayonaise (i use the japanese kewpie brand), add a little wasabi in it and mix it in well

Whiting are very sweet ^^^ but I like my fish (I like all fish so I suppose I'm easy) but I like to prepare fish by dipping in beaten egg and then covering in flour, drop into a frypan that has a little olive oil, and is hot, cook until golden brown, serve with a squirt of lemon juice.

If you are NOR you could try the Super IGA at Innaloo it has a nice range of fresh fish, from Red Emporers and other more northerly species to Pink Snapper from Southern waters, that is whole, you can also get fillets of other species. If you want the guy behind the counter will also fillet the whole fish for you.
