    Marketing or Drafting

Just wondering what types of jobs are out there at the end of a marketing degree?

Also anyone a draftsperson? Another career i'm considering...what is it like? Enjoyable? Creative? etc

I know they are very different but i am young, very confused and still deciding what i wanna do

Why not a Degree in Architecture ?

I was a draftsman for a number of years I also studied Architecture and Interior Architecture. (So close yet sooooo far)

I worked for a number of firms both big and small and on every type of development.

I enjoyed it for awhile but unfortunately I found that the drafties of the world tended to get relegated to low level tedious jobs. ie footing/eaves details things like that.

When I could get actual design work I loved it ... but it was a bit few and far between when I was working in the field.

If you love doing it .. then do it.

Some say he only showers on even days of the week

Some say he put an R1 motor in a coffee machine

All we know is he's Hewie.

Jobs in Marketing are NOT what you imagine them to be. The VAST majority of marketing grads get stuck in jobs where they are basically PA's. The problem is basically that businesses dont truly value their marketing staff (unless you are in a dedicated marketing firm). The pay is stupidly low and there are limited opportunities to improve.

this comes not from my personal experience, but from my GF's and a number of her friends who did marketing.

yeah i've had a look on seek and a lot of entry level marketing jobs, meaning degree qualified with a few years experience, are on about $45 000 - $55 000

don't know if that's good or not? must be a very competitive industry!

yeah its competitive. Pretty much every girl out there has a marketing degree (not saying guys dont do it, but 99% are girls).

yeah 45 is higher than a grad marketing position.

To put it in perspective, last year, a girl i know with 3 years marketing experience was on $45,000 at one of the big 4 accounting firms. The same firm was advertising for a PA with 3 or more yrs experience with a salary from $70,000 upwards depending on level of experience.

I'm not saying its all about money, but its certainly something you'd want to consider.

I was an electrical design drafty for years. It is hard to get into a company that want anything other then a tracer (eg. engineer puts lines on paper, you copy onto ACAD.) If you dont mind feeling like a monkey on a type writer the pay is pretty good. Once you actually get into the design side of things and dealing with clients its great and all sorts of opportunities open up. This is why i am no longer in the business.

    I read it as:

Got qualified, did 6 months work then left. I could be wrong however, it has happened a few times before.

where did you study dude? there are a couple of architects from UWA on here, be interested to see if there are many more.

OT: i think as far as the drafting Vs designing dilemma goes, it often seems to boil down to this: get paid decent money to transfer paper to CAD & do continuous detailing (draftstperson), or get paid comparitively little money to come up with your own designs (architect).

of course, both are usually lumped with shitkicker jobs for the first few years (like anywhere).

there is always a catch and it often depends on what you want from a job. i think with architecture (5 yr intense course for starting salary of $38k/yr!) you have to want to do it more than just as a "job to pay the bills". just my opinion...

Mechanical draftsman, no houses - love it.

Designing anything with Solidworks / Inventor / ProE etc is usually a job you dont get tired of quickly IMO.

    WRONG.

simply putting paper to CAD is a "tracer" not a "draftsperson."

a tracer is a simple CAD monkey. a draftsperson haz brains and uses them.

If your willing to work long hours and put in the years of tedious backdrafting work then design can be pretty rewarding. But you will take years to start making money and it's hard to get to where the real cash is ($70+ per hour).

If your serious about doing it get staight into trying to get a traineeship (with a reputable engineering firm...WorleyParsons etc) which will teach you real skills while you jump through the TAFE bullshit hoops. Don't think you will get a decent job or consider yourself even remotely qualified as a competant design draftsman after six months in college.

And by all accounts steer clear of house design stuff...the money is apparently bullshit compared to proper engineering (Can't comment cause never done it...but so i hear.)

P.S. i don't like your chances of landing a traineeship in the current climate but keep trying and it will happen.

some of them, but depends on the person/job. i have met plenty of draftspersons good for no more than being a CAD monkey! and plenty of others who were definately over-qualified for what they were doing too.

May have got bored in the final years ..... may have also been thrown out .... neither reports can be confirmed or denied.

Edit: I had already worked for while as a draftie before going back to do both.

Unfortunately ... some of the ideas the lecturers had didn't gel with what I had experienced in the "real" world.

Many of the younger ones had never even worked in the field ... just done the degree then gone through the motions to come back and teach so their views and understanding were bred from a sheltered position and really didn't reflect current practice.

In the end I had a blazing row with one of them when they told me that I didn't need to be concerned with if a building would actually stand up ... I just had to make it "look pretty" ........ final year mind you.

And at about that point we mutually agreed they were fucktards and I would go back to earning more money than them and they would stay in academia as closet wannabes.

In the end it worked out quite well for all involved.
