The boss of the policeman caught involved in the stunt, Superintendent Andrew Murray, took a lighthearted approach in dealing with the incident.

"The snow has a habit of bringing out the child in all of us," the Daily Mail reports him saying.

"I have spoken to the officers concerned and reminded them in no uncertain terms that tobogganing on duty, on police equipment and at taxpayers' expense is a very bad idea should they wish to progress under my command."

So it was a training and fitness drill. Sounds like time well spent to me.

I just love the people getting outraged, how dare somebody enjoy their job!

they've still got nothing on my brother and I teaching sailing courses...

Good day, ladies and gents - today is your last lesson, so we are going to test you.
You will use your newly found skills to:

    - rig boat, leave the pen and set sail towards the narrows bridge - reading the channel markers to avoid the shallow areas and avoiding any boats along the way
    - pull up to a jetty under sail power alone and dock against the jetty, safely secure the boat
    - enjoy a beer or two, as that jetty happens to be out the front of the old swan brewery

    *cheers from students*

So I get paid $30/hour to have a few people sail me to the brewery, buy me a beer, congratulate me on teaching them to sail, then get back after a few hours in time for them to buy me lunch at the yacht club

    Some more quality journalism:

Aussies prefer reading to sex: survey

    Summary:
    - IKEA has an online poll.
    - 35% of the 1000ish respondants would rather spend an extra hour with a book, compared to 20% who would spend it with a lover.
    - IKEA online poll results are then reasonably extrapolated to the 20,000,000 people of Australia who all are in the same demographic of people who fill out online IKEA polls.

Sex may not be all that it's cracked up to be, according to some Australians at least, who have revealed in a survey they prefer curling up with a good book rather than their lover.

When quizzed by Swedish furniture giant IKEA, one in three Aussies said that if given an extra hour in the day, they would prefer to read a book than get cosy with their other half.

The results of the online poll show 35 per cent of the 1057 respondents would opt to get stuck into a novel if they had the extra time, while only 20 per cent chose one-on-one time with their partners.

But it's apparently the nation's women who secretly yearn for paperbacks over passion, with 45 per cent saying they would opt for a good book while just 14 per cent would choose private time in the bedroom.

Men were more unlikely to snub their lovers for literature. Twenty six per cent said they would rather an hour of romance, while 25 per cent favoured reading.
    Not for individual sale.

Well if that isn't statistical integrity at its finest...

Too bad Dr. Tags is off to Europe and can't tell us a little more about the results...

Maybe it says more about the demographic of Ikea customers, in particular those who can be arsed responsing to stupid online surveys.

You know, dead eyes, minivan in the driveway for the 4 kids who have sucked any life out of them. The kind of person you can spot at the local shopping centre in tracksuit pants, or even sometimes still in their pyjamas.

Are you saying if Tags had done the survey the results would be biased?

People who write surveys always get the answers they want. They have a whole unit on how to do it at university.

Maybe. I don't really know. It's something I remember hearing about in the uni tavern this one time after a class I didn't attend.

Lefty: bang on. I remember a 'survey' that was circulating in Qld at the time they wanted to reduce the urban speed limits to 50km/h

It featured great questions such as:

Why do you think 50km/h limits are a good idea?
    [ ] increased safety
    [ ] noise reduction
[ ] won't somebody think of the children

There was no opportunity to dissent, the government hailed the result as overwhelming support and introduced the lower limits.

    olo.

I just got an email from the RAC about exactly this.

Anyone that wants to do their online survey best click here have received the email.

    Edit:

And here's the sucker punch question:

What measures do you think will help reduce the number of speeding motorists on our roads?
    • More speed cameras
    • A higher police presence on our roads
    • Better education of motorists about the potential affects of speeding
    • A blanket reduction in speed limits (lower limits by 10km/h on all roads)
    • Reduce limits on roads that have a history of speeding offences or crashes
    • Traffic calming measures where roads are designed so traffic speed is reduced
    • An increase in penalties
    • Electronic roadside displays which show drivers their speed as they approach

    editedit:

    fuggit, link is borked.
