I was going to purchase this stereo amp from jaycar about 18 months ago when it was selling for about $165 as part of a group buy...

...but I think I'll just hunt around for a cheapie/free one in the meantime

That's the one I'm talking about. Good, solid, cheap amp.

Just some stuff I was looking at Stevo, plenty of bargains on fleabay. I got a nice NAD amp a while ago for fuck all.

Good buy that.
The older NAD gear generally holds its own quite well.
Stevo: If I buy a new AMP, you can have mine. Old Marantz PM52.

I have a nice Kenwood intergrated amp I want to off load, even will put in a tuner.

have a look at the NAD pre amp, also on fleabay, is at $260! and still going.
Lotsa decent name amps are going on feabay for good money somehow!

I picked up my NAD 304 a year or so ago to drive 2 pairs of outdoor speakers for under $100. Was a lot cheaper than when I bought my original 304 from Frank Prowse over a decade ago.

I just bought a 7.1 Marantz sr4001 on Tuesday. Its a year or 2 old but its worth $1100 and I got it for 399.

Im still trying to work out how to rig the fucking thing up.

I have an old set of 5.1 speakers but if anyone has any spare tower speakers they dont want let me know. I dont care what brand.

While thats all well and good for watching movies, and a damn good deal! Music should only ever be listened to through 2 speakers.

Agreed. Even the high-res DVD-A or SACD multichannel albums are more gimmick than anything else.

when you say 2 speakers, don't forget the sub (so, 2.1). unless you've got very good floorstanders that can reproduce bass exceptionally, you must have a sub.

also if you're watching a live concert, in which case 5.1/6.1/7.1 is teh awesome.

Music is better in stereo.
Now if you're watching a live concert DVD that has been specifically mixed for 5.1 (and here I'll challenge you do find more than a handful of titles that have 6/7.1 encoding) then maybe you'd look at the full cinema but if music is your focus when buying, I think you're better off spending the money on stereo gear, rather than a HT setup.

well yeah, i was referring to live recordings done in 5.1-7.1 mix.
i've got a few 5.1's and i know i've got at least one in 7.1 recording.

but i agree, "normal" music is the best in stereo (2.1).

Bought my gear when I first moved out of home at the age of 19- sweet mid 90's Yamaha amp from Cash Coverters for $200, with virtual Dolby etc - doesnt bother me as I mainly just use it to crank music. Didnt have a remote, but I found a brand new remote for fairly cheap.
Speakers are oldschool Pioneer HPM-60's

That combo still goes well and has pissed off many a neighbour

There are some wonderful sacd mixes of orcherstra's playing in big famous concert halls and they have been mixed to replicate what it likes hearing it live there. So it's surround sound but no instruments actually come out the speakers behind you, just reverb, and the sound of instruments bouncing off the walls in the hall. Some of them are amazing.

With the speakers we have and the size of the room there is no need for a sub, but i stand corrected.

What kinda player do you listen to?
Is is a CD/DVD player?
A Cassette player?
A Reel to Reel player?
A Record player?
An 8 track player?
An EL cassette player
An I pod with a docking station?
I am at the moment playing a lotta records and find this medium just something special despite the occassional hiss and crackle.
It has a certain extra debt in the music.
I have played the very same track of the very same song of the very same album (Dire Straights) and the record player is just MILES in front!
