Just trying my hand at Lunar photography its not as focussed as i would like but its the best i could do at the moment.
Taken at 300mm on a D80 (its the DX sensor so its a 1.5x crop factor)
I've run a high pass filter over it to sharpen it a bit and overall i'm pretty happy with it

The sunrises and sunsets over here are spectacular. Still blows my mind when I see shots like that.

That sunrise is spectacular Ranmar, it must make getting up that earlier I little easier.

Does anyone have an opinion on these cheap arse macro rings? For this price I reckon its worth trying unless someone can tell me without a doubt that they are the shitest things ever and dont even work.

for the price they're definitely worth a play. You're not introducing any crappy cheap optics into the mix, just changing the distances between your existing optics and the sensor. I've seen some good results using extension tubes

In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

Extension tubes may or may not carry the autofocus signals and the aperture control signals for the lens.

Chucking your full auto lens on a tube which doesn't means you're stuck at widest aperture and manual focus with a massively reduced depth of field (measured in small numbers of mm) which can be challenging.

Also most extension tubes will foreshorten the maximum range of the lens. So focusing to infinity on the lens will mean you can only focus to maybe 50cm or so. Fine for close work, don't expect to be able to use it for anything else with the tube on board.

Apart from these limitations the tubes aren't too bad at all. As barfy mentions they don't introduce any more glass in the path.

One other option to consider is a bellows type rig. These are like an adjustable extension tube. I got one with my novoflex 400mm and it's got potential for macro too.
