I believe that it was the German Consulate during WWII, and was very closely watched. There was also something about it being the first building to receive a coded radio transmission (but don't quote me on that).

    grossly overexposed, but somehow effective?

Last effective shot for the night, as the tripod shat itself after, so I couldn't improve on it.

Great stuff, carlos, especially the archer fish..I had a lure snagged on a low hanging branch once, swinging just above the water, and an archer fish jumped at it and hooked himself How did you get him to shoot at you? Dangle a fly?

Cheers guys, that one took a few shots to get! haha

That particular shot was taken at a wildlife park where they had a big pool, however after we found out about how cool they were/what they looked like, we were getting them to do it down at one of the springs, just by holding out a finger.

My camera, and face got a squirt at one point, was funny until i realised my lens was all wet Dried pretty quick up there though

Can someone please explain macro lenses to me?

I have had a look around the net trying to find examples and reviews but all examples dont seem to show it as related to insects.

I am keen to try my hand at macro because the way I see it with macro you can go into your garden and find subjects everyday by shooting insects. You cant exacty just go out and shoot Landscape in your backyard.

One site I have found is This one but as you can see the best they show is the extension tubes and that doesnt exactly seem insect size.

I dont want to spend thousands and dont even want to spend more than 500 as I havent even tried my hand at it, but fucked if I can get some good answers that I understand on the internet.

IF anyone could give me some of their own examples or point me to a kick arse reference It would be greatly appreciated.

Also I know its a huge ask but if anyone has a macro lens or canon extension tubes or anything they could lend me it would be massively appreciated an all care will be taken and liquid thanks could be given.

I just want to try it before I go and buy shit only to realise it wasnt worth buying or isnt enough to achieve what I want.

Am I wrong in hoping to be able to take a photo of an ant that fills the whole screen or is that unobtainable without spending megabucks?

Macro just means that the lens throws an image onto the sensor which is the same size (or larger) as that of the object you're photographing. So the ant will be ant size or bigger on the sensor, which of course means a whopping great big ant on your screen.

You can play there cheaply. On my standard 24-70 lens I have a $40 ebay filter style +8 dioptre lens (aka "closeup filter") which gets me real close to my subject. Yes, it's distorted. Yes, the depth of field (focusable depth) is next to nothing so everything is blurry. But big stuff happens.

    for example:

You can use extension tubes. You can even turn an older manual aperture/focus lens from cashies back to front and tape it to the front of your normal lens to get a similar effect.

Big money on macro lenses means better quality, better depth of field and faster focus usually.

I ordered a set of Kenko Extension Tubes on monday.
(I'd normally only get Canon glass. But Kenko air should be same quality as Canon air.)

Will let know you how they go.
