You could apply and see what happens, guessing it would be the same as mines though +2 ~ 5yrs post apprenticeship, relevant field experience plus mining experience

As someone who works in the mining industry, (Electrical Supervisor) and know how hard it can be to get into an industry which is "screaming out for tradesmen" , it is probably similar. KEEP TRYING. Repeat as necessary. Once you have a foot in, and don't fuck up, you are made. As to particular skills, they will really be looking for a track record in Process Control. ie, hands-on experience with PLC's and instrumentation. It's smaller world than on-shore mining, but with higher renumeration and (mostly) equal time rosters. Which is doubtless why you want to get into it. Good luck.

generally you try for the smaller companies in that field which then lead you to the bigger companies.

Oil is a good example of this. Chevron by most people is considered the baby of Woodside. Get in to Chevron and you'll get a job at Woodside later on. Not sure if that's still the case today but in years gone by it certainly was.

Its probably the other way around these days viper... Chevron have some much bigger projects on the go and all of the long term woodsiders are getting paid more at Chevron. Be interesting to see what happens this year when some of the more "loyal" woodsiders realise / cash the golden handshake they signed up for a couple years ago...

From a pure offshore perspective though, Woodside have platforms and Chevron dont. Gorgon is a subsea development piped back to shore.

If I were you, id be targetting all of the offshore contract companies more so than the "operators" themselves. Either maintenance / construction contractors etc. They seem to be more readily accepting of less experienced guys. They pay you and charge the client / operator a margin on top - so for them, you equal $$.

The bigger companies and operators have the ability to pick and choose the people they want permanently and more often than not, as a result will look at experienced guys.

Starting out with a contractor is a good way to get the foot into the door, meet the right people - work hard and you might find an 'in'!
