perth airport 9th most hated in the world?

is it really so bad? or do we just have the most whingers coming through it? or is the west just going for more scaremongering articles? it's been a while since i went through the domestic terminal, so i'm not too sure just how bad it is, it's not so bad from the charter terminals. what do you lot reckon?

    not surprised.

One of THE most archaic facilities I have seen.

Needs $$$s invested pronto....it's not as if they don't have the land/opportunity to do so. And..FFS...build a rail facility to there. How could you accept that Great Eastern Hwy as a perfect vista for international tourists to see as the 'gateway' to Perth?

It'd also solve the clusterfuck that is 'public transport' in kewdale and welshpool... oh.. nowait.. we need a fucking tram line in mirrabooka first.

My only issue with the "worst airport in the world" is that it has been written by a penis someone has drawn a face on.

A frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times, Jordan's varied writing experience includes 12 cover stories for Southwest Spirit magazine, travel assignments and an advisory column for Islands, features for Maxim, celebrity profiles for Cowboys & Indians, five-star property reviews for Starwood and Resorts & Great Hotels and articles for Outside. He is the author of the acclaimed guidebook The Fun Seeker's Los Angeles (Greenline Publications, 2003).

Formerly of the TV and entertainment world, Jordan has worked as a staff writer at the electronic division of Paramount Studios and for a dramatic television series on The Lifetime Channel. He has also worked as a story analyst at Creative Artists Agency
I'm willing to bet that the Penis probably wasn't offered free upgrades to the quantas lounge "because i'm a journalist from L.A" or something.

This was his rationale for the worst airport ever.
"The worst part may be this airport’s aura of indifference to it all. “Waiting for a connection here,” notes one commuter, “is like being in custody.”

Perth's brittle facilities can be overwhelmed just by a trio of aircraft arriving within 20 minutes of each other.
Whether you like the article or not, that statement is very true. You can often have a sequence like Singapore (A330), Emirates, (B777) and Air Asia (A330) all landing in close proximity. The International terminal changes from a ghost town to having a queue of almost 600 people trying to make their way through customs and immigration in a very short amount of time. If you're on the last aircraft to disembark you'll be waiting for 2+ hours to get out, and then find that there are no taxis left in the queue.

I fly into and out of Perth domestic on a regular basis.
The pick up and drop off area is farcical as is the road arrangement leading to it.
Thursday mornings the line of people trying to get through the scanner is back to the check in consoles.
Last flight in, we landed god knows where and were put on a bus to get to the terminal vicinity then walk miles to get into and out of the terminal.
Considering they've only recently spent a small fortune on upgrading the facility, not good at all.

Perth airport is fucked and it is down to mismanagement of the infrastructure. It doesn't cope with disruption to schedules and access and facilities are poor.

How can you mostly just step into a cab in Sydney or Melb, and wait an hour in sleepy Perth?

The poms are as officious as oz customs and immigration.

    Perth airport's biggest problems are:

    - International and domestic separated by say 10km and ZERO public transport between them
    - Great eastern hwy the only way to get into the city? Seriously?

Put a fucking rail line out there, pronto.

That said, i agree its way better than charles de gaulle. Been there twice, its a prick of a place. If you think they're kidding with the statements about tunnels, and the bathrooms, etc... they're not. Its a fucking shit hole, and i am in no way kidding when i say that Almaty International in Kazakstahn is way better. Comparable/better than perth even

I'm also not kidding when i say that BAMAKO airport in MALI has similar public infrastructure to Perth domestic. If only it had a few more duty free shops it could compete with Perth international

When you walk out of the domestic airport, you see a small handful of taxis. But, down the road is the "feeder"; a large, shopping centre size carpark where all the taxis line up in rows.

There will usually be between 80 and 100 taxis sitting there. On really quiet nights it gets up to 130-150 (that's when they are also queueing up down the road, just to get into the feeder). To get through this (on a normally night) and actually pick up a passenger takes between an hour to an hour and a half. If someone gets in the car and goes to Rivervale (ie where all the cheap hotels are) then you've blown that time just for $15. I very, very, very rarely pick up at the domestic airport, and only do so if there is an unusually low number of taxis already there.

The taxi industry is quiet and oversupplied at the moment, so a lot of the dodgy drivers line up at the airport. They're too lazy and too useless to find jobs with the taxi computer (like I do), so they just line up at the domestic airport. Then they'll grossly overcharge the passenger. I had a pommy guy in the car the other day who was charged $76 to get to South Perth, which should have been under $30. Backpackers ask me what it should have cost them to get to their backpacker hostel ($30) and are pissed off that they were charged $45 or more. This is very, very common.

The staff out the front (Wilson staff) are arrogant and abusive. If I'm there then it's because I'm dropping off or picking up someone (private booking). That someone is paying the wages of the morons that they put out the front.

It's ironic that I can't/won't go there regularly. I'm a caucasian Australian, which is exceptionally rare for taxi drivers. Apart from 8 years living in the south west, I've spent the rest of my 40 years living in Perth. I know Perth and I know Australia. I'm able to give tourists a clear, running commentary about Perth, and answer accurately any questions that they may have. Basically, I'm the guy that should be picking people up at the airport, but it's not financially viable for me to do so.

Then there's the international airport, where you basically line up along a street (in the dark), which creates all sorts of fun when drivers walk off and don't move their car up. Because the taxis also line up two abreast, there are issues about who goes first, etc.

In three years of driving taxis, I've tried queueing up in this about five times. Complete waste of time.

One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.

My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.

It is good to hear Phildo's point of view...

For me, Perth Airports (Int & Dom) are pretty poor. Int in comparison to the Asian region and firther afield, Dom in comparison to the other state capitols. It rates as a larger regional airport in the east...

Parking is designed by retards - we need more so they move it further away and the customers can just walk with their luggage. If you retards in the Airports corporation don't want cars there, we will need public transport; if you aren't able to take care of that you are going to have to build multistory parking adjacent to the terminals - oh wait, we aren't in the east....

I could go on but the blood will boil...

Yep, it's pretty ordinary, lots of works going on though for the upgrades. I laughed when I pointed out that it's a pretty shitty view for first time international visitors, Welcome to Kewdale!
The lady at work suggested it should be near Northam out of the way so the traffic was better for people travelling on Roe. I laughed so hard. Yeah Northam, even if you chucked a train line it would be over an hour before you got to the capital. I asked jokingly, "I suppose boat people should be put in the middle of the desert in a fenced off area?"
    "Yep."

Christ, it's people like that that probably built the first airport with no vision for real expansion.

Don't worry, all will be fixed by the new light rail to......

    Mirrabooka??????????

jokes aside, I find the biggest issue with Perth airport is a lack of staffing. Every airport I've been to (bar Heathrow, that place was a shit fight albeit back in the 90's) the focus has been on getting you the fuck out of there in the shortest amount of time. Kansai wins this award, bags in hand and through customs 15 minutes after getting off the plane
You fly into Perth (international) and you're generally looking at a good hour before you can finally get the hell out the front doors.

That would've been either the 500 or 900 stand-off bays (most likely the 900's). The apron and tarmac arrangement is worse than the terminals. Not to mention the total ineptitude of the airports management team who will send planes down to remote stand-off bays when there are 3 airbridge bays clearly available.

In regards to parking and expansions, why is Perth so sacred to build up? How hard is it to put in a multi-level car park?

Perth airport is a bit shit but only because it's fairly small. If it was bigger it would have all the facilities that Melbourne and Sydney share. I've only ever been to 3 smaller airports. Koh samui, Rarotonga & Fiji I think.

It is what it is. Not great by any means but at least it has a bar!
